I first heard "Friik" and "Temper" when a friend showed me a demo he received at a show (didn't care for "Friik" much, loved, and still do love, "Temper"), then soon found out it was the same band who did "Sugar," so I have been listening to System of a Down for some time, but I did start to see a difference.

Now, I'm not saying that Hypnotize/Mesmerize both sucked, because I'll be the first to admit that Mesmerize didn't leave my car CD player for close to a month when it was released, but Hypnotize showed a sign of aging. I don't know if it was the hype, or if Mesmerize's material was so strong to me at the time that Hypnotize felt tired, rushed, or maybe uninspired. I guess, until Hypnotize, I found that I couldn't really say that System had a song that I'd skip because I didn't like it, or didn't care to hear the end of it.

I remember thinking recently, while discussing Hypnotize with my roommate, that they may have realized that while they previously wrote songs that stood for their beliefs and thoughts, you can only write about each subject in so many contexts before it becomes monotonous. They may have then figured the next best thing was to write about what ultimately fueled these beliefs, simplifying the parts, and writing about those. It may seem like selling out to some, but you can't say that they sat there and said "Hey guys, let's write shittier songs. I really want to sound more like Simple Plan."

Musically, come on, guys, let's think about it for a second, their self-titled was absolutely timeless and innovative, but "Sugar" had three chords and 7 notes repeated (which Korn later moved up to the 12th fret and used as the opening for "Falling Away From Me" if there are any players here that may remember 7th grade, lol). Nevertheless, their hooks and progressions were catchy, the solos in "Soil" and "Streamline" are fantastic, and it always catches your ear, but it was never that hard. Ever.

Don't mean to shit in anyone's fold-out couch, but that's how I feel the band has progressed.

What time was the show supposed to start and did it actually start at that time? And how long after that time did System go on?

7/10 Mayhem Fest or Buster Posey bobblehead day... FUCK

I'm thinking tons of BP Bobbleheads will hit ebay the next day for cheap. Machine Head alone is worth going to Mayhem for to me.

Hey, the best part about Mayhem is that you'll meet me, Tony

my comments and criticisms

Glad to see Radio/Video in the setlist, one of my favorite System songs. I am also very happy and surprised to see Tentative in the setlist. It was only played once before but I'm glad it's back. That song kicks ass!

But, one major complaint: NOTHING from Steal This Album! That's my favorite SOAD album and they complete skipped over it. I hope they at least add one song from Steal This Album! into the set, Mr. Jack preferably. Not that my preference matters because they're not touring the Midwestern United States.

But what can I say, I'm happy. The first metal band I ever got into is back!!!
