Question: how much were shirts/merch? What shirt designs were there? And I assume I should probably pick up a shirt real quick before I get my spot in the crowd because they'll probably be out at the end...

Big bands usually charge a lot for shirts. Though the only tour shirts I've paid 40$ for was for Iron Maiden and Roger Waters when I saw him do the Wall.
I wouldn't consider Rammstein as big as either of them.

these arenas all have staff, some union, some not, that take a cut of the merch they are selling. hence the higher prices. though, when the bands charge $65 plus for a hoodie, theyre just trying to milk us.

$40 is high, but it's not uncommon, especially at arena shows. I've seen shirts be $40 at Metallica, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, and Korn when I saw 'em in 2003. It's not that surprising since even smaller shows have shirts for $30-$35 usually.
