It's fucking awesome, I love it, but how do you then make a distinction between brutal death and deathcore? Other than the fact that one is pretty shitty?

I just want to open up a discussion about genre differences, I like to be clear about what I'm talking about.
Personally I differentiate through the bands' sound. Brutal death has more bass, less emphasis on breakdowns, and sometimes the burped vocals. Deathcore, is well, deathcore.

It's hard to explain through words, it's just something you pick up by listening to more of it.

Really, at the end of the day Old School Death Metal is the only "subgenre" of Death Metal you need to worry about. Brutal death, tech death, slam death, modern death or whatever other types exist fucking suck 99.8% of the time.

I would say the difference between "Brutal" DM and regular DM is Brutal DM is more, well, BRUTAL!! Lower, more gutteral vocals, more blast beats and speed.

Brutal death bands would be : Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Krisiun, Hate Eternal

Really? I always though Deicide was *the* pure death metal band, probably the most or one of the most important bands in the genre. I've never heard them labeled "brutal" before.

Guitar tone plays a large part. Brutal death metal tends to have riffs that sound a lot "chunkier" than regular death metal.
