Deftones - Diamond Eyes

From the first time I heard the song "Diamond Eyes" I was floored. Deftones managed to do what is the most exhilarating, and yet most difficult thing to do for any band, to keep the foundation of your sound, but infuse it with something modern or fresh. In their case, this was accomplished with guitarist Stephan Carpenter's introduction of an 8-string guitar, and some serious Meshuggah-worshipping riffs. Chino fully exploring his range and harmonizing skills, Frank Delgado's keyboards / DJ-ing adding some incredible mind-bending depth and ambiance, while drummer Abe Cunningham and new bassist Sergio Vega's poly-rhythmic foundation somehow glued it all together. That the band was able to pull it from the depths of such a horrible situation, is even more of a testament to how good this band truly is. Crushingly heavy, beautiful, passionate, real, Diamond Eyes is my album of the year.

It's funny I went through all 50+ lists on Roadrunner and found some interesting things. These are all employees of the label or band members so it's a decent representation of people who know music. Other than not sticking to the strict 2010 release date I was really impressed with the choices overall. Some interesting facts:

1) Deftones would probably be the #1 cd on their site. Top 3 definitely.

2) Of the 5 bands I called out for being overrated only 1 would be Top 10 on their site. Blind Guardian and rightfully so.

3) The only guy who chose Agalloch and had them as his #1 pick specifically said the song I called "U2 with shitty vocals" was the best song on the cd which I found totally amusing.

I'm an Agalloch fan and really like some of their heavier stuff but to call Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires the best song on the best album of 2010 makes that dude a total assclown to me.

Did Robb put out three horrendous nu metal albums when that's what the cool kids were doing? Really like the first machine head album, but they've put out some utter, utter garbage.

I only remember 2 horrendous albums but point taken. Not sure anyone has atoned more than he has though. I just bought myself the newest (and 3rd) Special Edition of The Blackening just because it's one of the 10 best albums ever made. I'm digging the new covers and demos so the other 2 are going on ebay. hahaha

I noticed this too. Maybe I need to give it another listen, with an open mind, because I just don't understand how so many metal bands have this as their #1 pick.

hahahaha. You know I was looking for a bunch of "homer" picks and was really impressed overall. A few too many Grand Magus, Stone Sour and Ratt picks but for the most part they chose all music types and from all labels.

Roadrunner are considered to be THE metal label in the World. Which is incredibly irritating because all they've done for the last 10-15 years is sign established, trendy bands to make more money. Then get the trendy metal magazines and festivals in their pocket and all club together to make every publication and popular festival bill identical.
