Can PS2 games be played on a PS3

If you had a PS2 and wanted to upgrade, would you go PS3 or x-box360?

2) I love Halo and Gears Of War, so I'd have to say Xbox 360

Are you sure on #1? I've heard this would only work if one had the first model of PS3 and that the newer ones dont work with PS2 games....I could have heard wrong though.

I googled it and found out that:

Only the first few models supported PS2 backwards compatibility. All the ones that were released in the last few years do not play PS2 games.

And on the second question, it could really go either way. Obviously if there are any exclusive game series' on the PS2 that you like then that would carry over into the PS3 (Ratchet and Clank, God of War, etc.) Both of the consoles have their advantages and disadvantages and good exclusives, so it's really up to you.
