I'm on the "more is more" side of the debate. My iPod has 226 artists, it would appear. Not too shabby considering I only have stuff I've bought.

I steal all kind of music, I buy quite a bit, so if I were to import every CD and rip every vinyl I'd have around 150-200 artists.

I'm sure that's nothing compared to some guys on here like Ravenheart and Manks, but on top of that probably 100 are just bands that are there because of splits, I feel the need to listen to both sides of split 7"s at a time so there are quite a few bands that I really wouldn't seek out normally, like Wadge(my favorite all time band name.)

I see no reason to keep listening to more bands just to listen to them if you're content with what you have already.
I agree with your theory that a handful of favorites is a lot better than hundreds of "ok" bands. However, 62 is a bit low for me. I think I have around 130 artists and I'm still missing a few. I used to be part of the "more is always better" group when I was younger and I've found I'm much happier with my music now that I've gotten rid of the stuff that was just decent and stuck with the (mostly) great stuff.
