Cynic -- New York, NY -- August 6th, 2010
Dysrythmia was a pretty cool opening band, I am kind of getting tired of these instrumental prog bands (Scale The Summit, Animals As Leaders) but I will say these guys are better than those two. The bassist was the guy from Behold The Arctopus, Gorguts, and Krallice. I believe they were also selling merch from BTA and Krallice.
Intronaut was alright. They seemed like a hit or miss band. I was bored during the first few songs but towards the end of the set their songs we a lot better and they ended with a pretty cool drum duet with the drummer and guitarist. Cynic was one of the most unique bands I've ever seen perform. They sound exactly like they do on the record if not better. There really aren't that many instrumental bands, and the genre has been around for quite some time, so if you're tired of it you probably never liked it much in the first place. I guess music without vocals isn't for everyone, but I always enjoy it.

"Instrumental" isn't a genre, though. There's nothing in common between its incarnations except a lack of vocals. A lot of classical music is instrumental. Same goes for jazz. Most post-rock is instrumental, and so are a lot of shred albums. The particular kind of instrumental music that he's talking about does mostly suck, yes. I own a Behold...the Arctopus record, and I'm not entirely sure why.

King Of Those Who Know is absent again too. Good to know I wasn't the only one who got a slightly shorter set. I wonder why they're doing this.

It likely isn't a voluntary thing, they're just having time constraints, then decided to take the same songs out when they're running short.

Probably. Paul's mic and vocoder were giving them hell at soundcheck at my show, and even then they still had to fix shit during Focus.
