Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power changed my life more than any other album. Walking into a bar/club/concert after listening to A New Level worked wonders for my love life.

Dream Theater - Images and Words (MUST be on the list. Easily the most important Prog Metal album ever made)

Most of the other really important ones have already been mentioned.

If you're straying into hard rock, a few must-haves:

Thin lizzy - Jailbreak
UFO - Phenomenon

Hells YES! Probably my favorite album of all time, by my favorite band of all time. That album makes you feel so much more confident in yourself, not in a macho way, but in a 'I can do this' way.

I always thought that Cowboys was Pantera's best, with Power Metal coming in second. But I just prefer the stuff where Phil actually sings as opposed to sounding as gruff as possible. Vulgar is still a classic and highly influential album, though.

I can understand where you're coming from, but I think you making a tad bit of a sweeping statement there, This Love, Hollow and Live In A Hole all feature some very impressive vocal melodies, granted nothing as challenging wa what he did on cowboys, but to me FBD was the album in which Phil fully left the melodic singing and just decided to growl his way through the album.

Enslaved - Hordanes Land, Frost, or Isa? (Maybe a bit broad...)
Opeth - Still Life
Immortal - Pure Holocaust, At the Heart of Winter, or Sons of Northern Darkness?
Strapping Young Lad - City
