NEMHF -- Worcester, MA -- April 23rd, 2010
Doors apparently opened at noon - I didn't get there until about 6:30, but was there in time for the entire Mastodon Tour, which was all I really cared about. Fortunately I had friends who pulled me into the front row with them despite my being so late
![]() Valient Thorr is just as fun as everyone on here keeps saying. They're wacky and unafraid of being who they are. Frontman Valient's favorite catchphrase seems to be "You know what I'm talking about?"... this may be preceded by such statements as "Make the world a better place!" or "Let's all go deaf!" or "You'd better all be sweating like pigs!" They played about 6-7 songs, but the only song I 100% remember was Mask of Sanity (sorry!) Baroness was definitely my favorite act of the night. Wow. They sound amazing live. Thought I don't have the setlist, I DO have a list of songs I believe they played to get the next person started. They are mostly pulling songs from the Blue Record with two or three from the Red Album. Blue: A Horse Called Golgotha Jake Leg Swollen and Halo Ogeechee Hymnal O'Er Hell and Hide War, Wisdom, and Rhyme Red: Wanderlust Isak BTBAM were cool, but I would've been happier if they just played Alaska . Mordecai was a nice touch, though.Obfuscation Disease, Injury, Madness Prequel to the Sequel Backwards Marathon Fossil Genera - A Feed from Cloud Mountain Mordecai Mastodon got through their Crack the Skye set, but was beset with technical problems? afterwards AGAIN. The good news was that Brent DIDN'T flip out. The bad news was that after his guitar shorted out mid-Capillarian Crest (maybe... or maybe not...), he left the stage... and the other 3 had to finish the song without him. 10 minutes later Mastodon came back on and then were only able to perform one more song before giving up . NEMHF got gipped, and I can't even tell if it was Brent's fault or due to technical problems. Both are likely stories. I'm honestly not really sure on the setlist because while the songs were the same, they were definitely in a different order than they have been on other nights of the tour (Crack the Skye was second, for example).

That really blows. I'm sorry for everyone in attendence that was expecting a whole set more of Mastodon and having Brent walk off the stage. They got fucking gipped.

Since this was my first (and potentially last) time seeing Mastodon, and I frankly just don't know... who is supposed to be the main vocalist? This matters in my opinion of whether Brent pulled a Brent.

On CTS Brent is the main vocalist. On the older stuff Troy does most of the vocals.

Troy was definitely carrying the vocals. I officially call shenanigans on Brent.

I agree. When I saw them last May Brent was alright but Troy was a monster. Troy is the far superior vocalist and should carry the load on CTS as well as the older stuff.

Troy carries the band. Brann is God on the drums, Bill is extremely competent, Brent is the weak link, and Troy is like Steve Harris and Bruce Dickinson rolled into one.

Latest explanation for Brent's mid-song disappearance came from my new merch friend. Apparently when Mastodon arrived at the venue last night, Brent was in a sling.
So either 1) busted appendage 2) personality issues 3) technical issues 4) drunk? (someone in the front row claimed that one) 5) all of the above? In the end it doesn't really matter. At least NEMHF day 2 was amazing!
