But you see, in Metallica's case there was a large sound change from the first four albums to nearly every other album they've released. Same with Sepultura, although Sepultura was more of a gradual change. I'm in the same boat as Powermaiden, I love the first five albums, but the rest dont settle with me too well.

those 4 first albums are so strong, so inovative (if you put in perspective the years they came out) that to me they give Metallica a lot of ranks in my ranking of bands. So just by jugging them on that I find they are better than all the bands I listed below. anyway that's the way I see it

maybe not for you but Whitechapel is a great band whether people like them or not. This Is Exile is probably the greatest deathcore album to come out, with of course 90% of them being shit.

A friend of mine has a theory regarding bands:

Once you release 4 "Masterpieces", it doesn't really matter what else you do - you're "in". This is how he justifies that Queensryche are still one of his favorite bands, even though he hates everything they've done in the past 15 years.

I don't agree in black and white, but I'm alright with the logic.
