Symphony X -- Philadelphia, PA -- April 6th, 2008

Alright, so last night was my third time seeing Symphony X in the past year, and probably the best of the three.
My friends and I got to the venue around 4-ish and waited the long but not too bad wait. My friend and I got pictures with Mike Lepond as he was coming back from eating dinner around 6.
Doors opened promptly at 7 and we got front row, generally between Mike Romeo and Russell Allen. First band, the regional act Stygian went on shortly at like 7:15. They weren't any good IMO but not terrible either. Into Eternity came on at 8 and surprise surprise, they still suck after my 5th time seeing them. This is getting pathetic how many times I've seen a band I can't stand. Epica came on at like quarter-of 9 and played an 8-song, 45-minute set. As far as I, a generally non-Epica fan could tell, Amanda Somerville did a fine job with the vocals, but despite how awesome I found most of their music, I really cannot get into either style of vocals at all. Regardless, they still played a fine show.
Symphony X came on at just about 10. Things were bitchin' right from the start. Overall their sound mix was a ton better than the two previous times I saw them, as you could clearly hear every person once they turned the keyboards up a few songs into the set. Everyone played really well and as usual Russell Allen was a live vocal god and one of the best frontmen out there, bar none. I've seen few people with a better on-stage dynamic than Allen and Romeo. Set list was good, I got to see 5 songs I've not seen live before so that was naturally quite good. However, I was a little upset with the way the rotation worked out, as they played Egypt and the Death of Balance instead of Through the Looking Glass, one of my all-time favorites. Also they have apparently pulled Sea of Lies for Walls of Babylon. I don't really care either way, I think Sea of Lies needs to be retired for a while but I think they could've picked a much better song to replace it with. Oh well, I won't bitch, the show was fucking incredible. Mike Romeo threw a pick RIGHT TO ME but I didn't catch it and then the security ass hole just gave it to someone else. I was PISSED. However I was able to get a set list and my friend got one of Jason Rullo's drumsticks. So all was well. I picked up a new SX hat afterwards, and we were able to talk to Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater for a bit. This is now my second time meeting him and neither were at a DT show.
So all in all, fantastic show, SX rule live, if you've seen them, you already knew this.

1.Set the World on Fire
2.Domination
3.Serpent's Kiss
4.Masquerade
5.Paradise Lost
6.Egypt
7.The Death of Balance
8.Walls of Babylon
9.Inferno
10.Smoke and Mirrors
11.Revelation / Divine Wings of Tragedy VII
Encore:
12.Eve of Seduction
13.Of Sins and Shadows

Out of the Ashes was on the set list between Eve and Of Sins but it was not played, much to my dissapointment.

Out of 4 as well this was the best Symphony X show I've been to. It was cool meeting Mike Lepond and Mike Portnoy again, and I came away with the mentioned drum stick and also a very cool Odyssey t-shirt for only $15.

Highlights were Paradise Lost and The Death of Balance.

Trust me, you'll hear no bigger critic of this than me. I think Paradise Lost is a weak dissapointing Symphony X album, and pales greatly in comparission the previous 4 albums.
However, I compliment them for bringing 2 new songs into the set, as well as altering the non-Paradise Lost material to include stuff not done for a tour or 3.

Well, personally I loved Paradise Lost but it agriavtes me when bands play like ALL new material, no matter how good it is, ESPECIALLY when you have such a great back catalogue as Symphony X does.
