Pig Destroyer -- Phantom Limb

ADD isn't the only one who can do reviews around here

Metal's been around for roughly 30 years or so now, and throughout that time bands have always tried to outdo one another in speed and heaviness. After so long, you'd think that bands would have a hard time taking metal to new levels of brutality and insanity, but you'd be wrong, because Pig Destroyer are one of the most insane and devastating bands to ever pick up instruments. Not only that, but their music is catchy and memorable enough to have you listening again and again.

Phantom Limb is their 4th album, and follows up 2004's outstanding Terrifyer, which I thought they wouldn't be able to top, but they did, somehow. Terrifyer took the grindcore they'd perfected on 38 Counts of Battery and Prowler In the Yard and combined it with death metal, thrash, and hardcore to create a truly horrific and unholy sound. Like their other releases, the album starts off with a fantastically creepy opener, "Rotten Yellow," which features a man repeating "body of Christ..." over screeching feedback before the sound drops out and a young girl says "Mommy...they're coming" as the band comes out of the gate with some inhumanly fast grindcore. One main difference between this album and Terrifyer is that many of the songs actually go over 3 minutes, which allows the band to write longer, more ambitious compositions that are still brutal. There are tons of great riffs, especially on "Heathen Temple" and "Machete Twins," and the drumming is unbelievable. Just as you might expect, the whole album is completely relentless, and it's often difficult to catch the transitions between songs, which just adds to the album's intensity.

This is easily the best album of the year for me so far, and it's going to take a lot for something to top it. Pig Destroyer are the very best at what they do, which is pummel the shit out of you with a bombardment of sonic insanity, and then leave you begging for more.

I listened to this album three times in twenty-four hours. It's amazing.
Mortals are mortar and life is the fuse.
