Are Today's Metal Albums Just Too Damn Loud?

Thomas Whitaker of The Sun has written the music industry for the increasing volumes on album releases. Quoting Geoff Emerick, an engineer on the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s album: “A lot of what is released today is basically a scrunched up mess..... Whole layers of sound are missing. It’s because record companies don’t trust listeners to decide themselves if they want to turn the volume up.”

When I listen to "newer" albums on iTunes the volume does increase noticeably. By contrast, whenever I play anything from "Bonded By Blood" it seems quieter than the rest of the library.

Yeah, I only notice in iTunes, but it's not just metal CDs, most CDs today seem to be louder.

Maybe old albums are too quiet.

newer CD's are louder than older ones, at least that is what I have noticed.

although they may be louder, i think the change is most importantly the new recording technologies get much more bass in the mix. Listen to Powerslave, then listen to AMOLAD and you will notice that the bass sound (not the instrument, the pitch level) is far more pronounced. This is especially noticeable on rap albums.

I don't like it cause when you put songs on a custom CD or mp3 player you gotta keep adjusting your volume from song to song.
