Dear whiny teenagers:

How would you like to participate in a fascinating market research study? By setting aside just a few minutes of your time, you can make a positive contribution to the ongoing education of whiny teenagers such as yourselves in a noteworthy midwestern college town. In fact, all you have to do is answer three questions:

What media (e.g., websites, TV shows, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, comic books, video games, books, advertisements, CDs, concerts, etc.) do you consume on a regular basis? (Please be specific.)

What media do your friends and peers consume on a regular basis?

What media do you think of as specifically geared toward your age group?

In recognition of your participation you will receive a grant of $7,000* from the Michigan Council for the Study of Media's Effects on the Whininess of Teenagers. Thank you for your time and attention.

(*Some restrictions apply. Void in inhabited areas.)

Do you want to know specifically which CDs, TV shows, etc. we consume, or just which of those categories?

Apparently a little too dolled up.

But yeah, I'd really like to know. I want to teach some workshops later this year that would get high school students to write creative/critical pieces in response to some of the crap they get fed by the media.

Alrighty then, let's do this:

1. a) web sites: this one, Blabbermouth, eBay, Myspace, metal-archives
b) TV Shows: The Daily Show and the Colbert Report, primarily
c) Radio programs: N/A
d) Magazines: Decibel, Revolver, Time
e) Newspapers: N/A
f) Comic Books: N/A
g) Video games: Guitar Hero II
h) Books: Too damn many, but I guess classics and philosophy are the big ones.
i) Advertisements: Umm...
j) CDs: Again, too many, but I guess you'd say the more rock/metal leaning labels would be my favorites.
k) Concerts: Whatever's good...

2. Going to the movies, watching Comedy Central, listening to music...

3. Comedy Central is VERY geared towards young adults, I'll say that much. And even though I can't stand them, fashionable brands like AE and Aeropostale are very geared towards young adults as well.

Not sure if I did that right, but there ya go

Yikes. Okay, I'll give it a shot.

Websites: On a daily basis, I use this board as well as the AFI message board. I also use Facebook and Myspace, Something Awful, Fark, The Onion, various webcomics, and CNN and Yahoo for news.
TV Shows: The Simpsons, Family Guy, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Mythbusters, South Park, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Reno 911
Radio: I don't listen to the radio, except for NPR on occasion and sometimes my friend's college radio show.
Magazines: None, really, though I occasionally browse through Spin, Revolver, The Economist, Motor Trend, and Rolling Stone at the bookstore.
Newspapers: Arizona Daily Wildcat, New York Times, and occasionally the Arizona Daily Star.
Comic books: None
Video Games: Final Fantasy III, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, New Super Mario Bros., and a few more.
Books: Unfortunately, I don't have much time for recreational reading during school, but I often read non-fiction, usually related to politics or the military.
Ads: Eh. Whatever's plastered around town/on TV/whatever.
CDs: I don't buy them as often as I used to. The last thing I bought was Arcade Fire's "Neon Bible."
Concerts: The last two shows I went to were AFI and Against Me!.

As for my friends, I'd imagine the picture looks pretty much the same.

Things like Myspace and Facebook are specifically and relentlessly targeted towards my demographic. They're insanely popular among the college crowd, and they've become ingrained in our culture. Video games, too, are definitely geared towards the 18-24 male age group, along with TV shows like The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy. More specifically, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are both very much made for the liberal college age crowd.
