I hear you, I too am trying to be well-versed in movies - I'm hoping it's a journey I never feel I've finished! But already some picks in there aren't obvious; Donnie Darko doesn't get talked about enough, Good Will Hunting, The Breakfast Club and Insomnia are outstanding and Inception - man, I could go on and on about my love for that film.
Screw what's 'well-known', your list doesn't need to be David Lynch, Shane Carruth and Jim Jarmusch to be valid, interesting or well validated.
