When people find out that I know my fair-share about the Melvins they always say, “I really want to get into the Melvins, but I don’t know where to start”. Well, son, this is where you start. This was my first Melvins album so it may as well be yours too. It pretty much runs the gament of everything the Melvins have been or ever will be. You’ve got straight up rockers (Going Blind, Set Me Straight, Copache), slow dirges (Hag Me), experimental fuckery (Sky Pup, Spread Eagle Beagle) and fucking awesome riffs (Hooch, Night Goat, Honey Bucket, Night Goat, Night Goat). All in one album. As you may have noticed, they got signed to a major label for this album. That was thanks to the whole grunge thing and the fact that Kurt Cobain and the rest of Nirvana had gone on in interviews how the Melvins were one of their favorite bands. So Atlantic swooped in and signed what they thought would be the next Nirvana. But, they (the Melvins) probably got some money from all this and were able to make three great videos for this album. It’s not my favorite album by the Melvins because it loses a bit of steam after Set Me Straight. But it’s definitely top ten. And if you don’t like anything on this album you won’t ever like anything by the Melvins
