The Wonder Years -- Chicago, IL -- May 11th, 2013
This was show 3 of 4 on The Wonder Years 24 Hour Greatest Generation CD Release Tour and man was it insane.
First off it was a early show with doors at 10 and the opener went on around 10:15 or so. Add the fact that this was a sold out show onto that and you've got the recipe for a good time.
The openers were Mixtape and they were surprisingly really good. Their guitarist and bassist did vocals (female and male). Made it a mix between good pop punk and reminded me at times of a faster paced Paramore. They made a good fan out of me and had the crowd going as well. The band was clearly having a great time as well. No set though since they were doing requests and playing whatever song of theirs they wanted at random.
Next up was the main band, The Wonder Years and the sold out crowd couldn't wait. I never did realize how many people were in the band though but it didn't matter as that didn't stop the entire venue from having non stop crowdsurfers and stagedivers. It was nonstop throughout their whole set and often was just a mess at how many people were doing it. Plus since the crowd was never standing still it made it hard to do. I surfed and dove during "Logan Circle" and the crowd kept dropping me almost because everyone was moving around. I did do a great high jump off the middle stage amp though.
Soupy talked about the adventures so far about the 24 hour tour and how it was something that people said would be a failure trying to get people to a 10am show. He also said at the end how the band will have enough time after the show to wipe off and pack before heading to the airport and that they will arrive 10 minutes before their next show.
Their set featured fan favorites with one of the singles off the new album as well. The crowd sang every word to every song making it a off the wall show that will be up there as one of the best shows of the year.
