My issue originally with cheap ass shared hosts was performance and flexibility. Over the course of years, serving up web pages for this site is not the only project I've maintained on the server. You have to remember we started before the cloud and virtualization were common. Regardless, we've long since outgrown that kind of solution anyway.
The 'whole backend' is really easy for me. That said, the architecture I would put in place for a commercial site with appropriate failover and redundancies is simple out of scope for metalsetlists. I do with what I have. There are cloud solutions that would solve some of my problems but they also introduce others. Change is definitely afoot.
