Dethklok -- Toronto, Ontario -- October 23rd, 2009

Dethklok
Support: Mastodon, Converge, High On Fire
Date: Saturday, October 23rd, 2009
Venue: the Sound Academy in Toronto, Ontario

I’ve been finding a lot of setlists from shows I’ve been to on the past so I decided to post them. Some of them are with the help of setlist.fm, but these aren’t just me ripping setlists and posting them (that would be too easy). These are all shows I’ve been to and have stories to tell.

This was one of those shows that I really only went to because it was on a weekend. I make a special rule that since I work nights and don’t want to miss too much work for show but I’ll go see most bands on weekends, even if I’m not a huge fan. I wanted to see Mastodon, despite not being to high on their newer stuff, I do like Dethklok even though the shtick had worn out on me, but I really wanted to see High On Fire again, even though they were first billed. However, me being the eternal idiot that I am I didn’t check the start time on my ticket, and showed up after High On Fire and Converge were both done. I do know that High On Fire were playing Fury Whip, Blood From Zion, Waste of Tiamat, Frost Hammer and Rumors of War
on this tour. Converge I’m not too upset about missing, I heard they weren’t that great.

I showed up about five minutes before Mastodon took the stage. This was during the set for Crack the Skye where they were playing the album in its entirety. So I knew what to expect for the first half of their set. I’d heard they weren’t that great but I thought they sounded awesome and the visuals were really cool too. The encore consisted of a short, reverse chronologic set from their other three albums. I’m one of those douchebags who are usually like, “they lost it after Remission, why aren’t they playing Ole’ Nessie, this is bullshit” but that’s how I feel. The crowd completely died during the Bit, which was unfortunate seeing they were really hot for everything else. It was like going 100MPH for over an hour then hitting a brick wall. I love the Melvins but I’ll admit that it wasn’t a very good cover. And I think 95% of the people there had no idea what the hell it was.

Mastodon

Dethklok were up after a video with the “band” and Eddie Riggs from the upcoming Brutal Legend game. Video’s of the cartoon band performing were played during the whole set, of course, and I haven’t seen much outside of the first season but I think there were a lot of original ones made for the tour. But I spent most of the time watching Brandon Small perform. They guy is actually a pretty wicked guitar player. And Gene Hoglan on drums. I think this may be the only time I’ve seen him live, even though he’s in every band. They sounded awesome. Black Fire Upon Us, Murmaider and Go Into the Water were probably the set highlights for me. But anything from the first album was a lot better than the second, with the exception of Black Fire Upon Us. I’d say Mastodon should’ve been the headliner.
