Yngwie Malmsteen -- Silver Spring, MD -- October 15th, 2011

Went to see Yngwie J. Malmsteen at the new Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD last night. Was a pretty nice, clean, spacious venue. It was pretty crowded, but the balcony was not open. Crowded, but not PACKED to the brim. Def several hundred people- I don't know the capacity of the venue but it was a well attended show.

Merch included some decent shirts, $10 CDs (not bad), DVDs, and um candles? wtf? Also they had free apples, apparently (think this was the venue, not Yngwie's doing).

DC locals THE JONES (apparently- I've never heard of them, and what a horrible name) opened. Kind of a bluesy sound. Nothing bad, but nothing great or distinctive from the couple songs I heard.

I don't know if it was the venue or Yngwie's stage set- but there were stacks and stacks of Marshalls (not all of which were turned on). Yngwie came on a little after 9, and he sounded very good. The acoustic stuff and parts where it was just him playing sounded GREAT. He may be a bit chubbs, but that man knows how to put on a show- he was constantly moving, spinning his guitar around him, throwing it up, posing, and threw about 100 guitar picks to the crowd. All while playing effortlessly and smiling! Of course I still get the impression that he's an egomaniac because of the way the stage was set up -the bass, keys, drums were relegated to the side of the stage. Yngwie had about 75% of the stage to prance and run about on (which he did). Whatever the case, I still enjoyed the very entertaining show. There were def a few times where the noodling was a bit *much,* but when you go see Yngwie, you know what you're in for.

Ripper was kind of relegated to the 'backup band' section too. He was wearing some ridiculous MONSTER energy drink leather shirt.

Yngwie broke the strings and threw his guitar over his back (to a roadie) at one point, as well.

I am assuming all the instrumentals besides Black Star and Far Beyond the Sun were in the right order as the NY show- I recognized most of them, and they seem about right. He did NOT play I am A Viking but threw in Demon Driver after Into Valhalla. he played most if not all the National Anthem after Far Beyond the Sun, as well.
