This ‘94 John Carpenter film stars Sam Neil as an investigator of sorts searching for a missing author. The story is loosely adapted from a couple HP Lovecraft stories, and as far as an adaptation of Lovecraft to film it is actually rather successful. The missing scribe in question is a mega-popular horror author whose obsessive fans across the country are beginning to go mad with anticipation of his upcoming novel. In comes the skeptical Sam Neil, hired by the publishing company, to find the lost novelist. Sanity and reality melt away upon his ensuing journey. This is a well-done Carpenter film that doesn’t just drag on like some of his flicks do.

Both the Metallica song 'The Thing That Should Not Be' as well as 'In The Mouth Of Madness' draw on HP Lovecraft’s story ‘Shadow Over Innsmouth’ for inspiration. As Sam Neil’s character is ‘drained of his sanity’ he learns he must ‘face the thing that should not be’.
