To be honest, my feelings about this are mixed. I was prepared for it to be album of the year after they announced a return to a heavier sound, but with a few exceptions, that didn't happen. I was really disappointed by it, and it took me a bit of time to get over that. The album itself, disregarding what I thought it would be, ranges from decent to mediocre. It mostly sounds like Mastodon's attempt to create a prog-rock album with elements of their own unique style, and they did pull it off. The problem is that it isn't memorable. The songs are just not that good. I may warm to it more, but Mastodon had something unique going for them before CTS, and they seem to have lost that going on an increasingly proggier and softer path, which may be what the band wants to do, but they just don't do it that well.
