the cleans do sound a bit whiny to me is why they turned me off. however, I will be the first to admit I judge albums/bands very quickly and I've only given this one listen. I will always go back and give things another chance after taking a break from it though.
And yes, I play guitar and bass, and I do like the guitar work on this album.
