Journey -- Wallingford, CT -- September 13th, 2009

This show was the last of Heart being on this tour, so they went all out. By far Heart blew Journey away. Heart was solid as they played off each other, had a relaxed stage presence, and look as though they were having a good time. Their song selection spanned over every decade since the seventies. Nancy Wilson looked like a thirty year old, dancing, and jumping around. But the highlight of the night was Ann Wilson's voice. She was dead on and gave me goosebumps. Her vocals filled the arena and this would have to be the best live female vocal performance I have ever witnessed.

Journey on the other hand: not so good. Yes, I know Neal Schon is one of the all time great guitarists-and he was dead on. The problem is that Schon and the rest of the band did not mesh with their new Steve Perry look a like, 20-something-year-old, asian, energetic singer. He sounds just like Steve Perry, but when he is running and jumping around the stage, and the rest of the band just stood there like statutes... well, he looked out of place. The band played three new songs that just were not that great-most people sat down at this point. I would have to say that during a few of their songs, their drummer sang and drummed simultaneously, which is a pretty difficult talent to master.

Journey was not worth the $150 15th row tix, but Heart certainly helped ease some of that pain. Overall, I think Heart should have opened, and with a couple of tributes to the Who and Led Zepplin, they were definately the better act.

dreamboat annie
