Propagandhi -- Tucson, AZ -- May 23rd, 2009

This is mostly for Brad, but I still urge any of you who have the slightest interest in punk to check these guys out. They've incorporated a lot of metal influences into their last couple of records, and IMO they write the most intelligent lyrics of any band around these days.

The first opener was some local (I think) punk band who were so unremarkable that I've already forgotten their name a mere hour after the show. A bunch of college age kids pounding out sloppy 80's punk. Snore. The "official" opener, Bridge and Tunnel, on the other hand, were out-fucking-standing. I don't know how to describe them using any bands that anyone here would have heard of, but they were great. I made sure to pick up their album at the merch table after the show.

Propagandhi, for those who don't know, are a very politically charged punk band from Canada. In terms of their beliefs, I'll just say that sometimes they make Rage Against the Machine sound like Rush Limbaugh. They're active in many advocacy and human rights groups, and are very vocal about their vegan beliefs and animal rights. It's the one thing I don't see eye-to-eye with them on, but I respect that they're so passionate about it. Anywho, their latest album, Supporting Caste is a goddamned masterpiece, and I'm very grateful I got to see them touring in support of it (their US tours are extremely rare and limited). They didn't play quite as much new stuff as I expected, but they chose some of the best songs. Here's the setlist (not in order):

Supporting Caste
Tertium Non Datur
Human(e) Meat (The Flensing of Sandor Katz)
The Banger's Embrace
A Speculative Fiction
...And You Thought Nation States Were a Bad Idea
Bringer of Greater Things
Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes
Back To the Motor League
Less Talk, More Rock
Mate Ka Moris Ukun Rasik An
Haillie Sellasse, Up Your Ass
Apparently, I'm a "PC Fascist" (Because I Care About Both Human and Non-Human)
Rio de San Atlanta, Manitoba
Anti-Manifesto

Fuck the Border*
Dear Coach's Corner
Purina Hall of Fame

*Sung by two audience members

It was a really fucking amazing show, one of the best I've ever been to. A lot of their songs (especially the newer ones) are very technical, but they pull it off live effortlessly, and with tons of energy. The crowd went fucking insane, too. I'm really glad I got a chance to see them.
