Yngwie Malmsteen -- New York, NY -- October 26th, 2008
Forget the ego and the fat jokes, Yngwie Malmsteen and his Rising Force put on one hell of a show Sunday night at the Blender Theater in New York City. It was one of the best shows I've been to in a while and the band really, truly sounded great. Tim "Ripper" Owens did a tremendous job on vocals. He soared through classic Yngwie like "I'll See The Light, Tonight" and "You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget", new Yngwie ("Death Dealer", "Red Devil") and even a cover of Rainbow's "Gates Of Babylon" with such zest and energy that his performance was really remarkable and impressive. And certainly, the man himself, Yngwie Johann Malmsteen did not disappoint. Impressive as always on his many guitars, Yngwie was also a stage presence to be reckoned with. He is one of the few guitarists who can command a stage the way the lead vocalist needs to. Watching Tim and Yngwie share that space and work with such stage intelligence as to know when to take center spotlight and when to work just as hard in the background was a pleasure to watch. I have to say this was one of the few concerts I've been to where I really did not want it to end.
The set list (In no particular order):
Live To Fight (Another Day)
Gates Of Babylon
Magic City (Yngwie on vocals)
Black Star (Instrumental)
Crown Of Thorns
I'll See The Light, Tonight
You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget
I Am A Viking
and a slew of other instrumentals from Yngwie (can't recall all of them right now).
All in all a really terrific, professional perfromance by all involved. A pure pleasure to behold and I cannot wait for the Rising Force to return to NY.
