Rockstar Mayhem -- San Francisco, CA -- July 12th 2008
So here I am, on "the morning after". Not really, since after I got home "last night" I ended up talking to my dad for an hour and a half while watching the 2nd and 3rd hours of VH1's Metal documentary. I figured I had to have 2am dinner and watch at least the 20 minutes of the glorious thrash era after sitting through over an hour of the hair decade. Funny how that timeframe works out after describing the thrash fans as dedicated, somewhat intelligent people as opposed to the sex, drugs, sex, sex, drugs, drugs, drugs, rock and roll, od, rehab, relapse, comeback tour lifestyle on the sunset strip.

As an example to anyone entering high school/college, this is what happens when you write at 6 in the morning without sleep. Sorry about it but this is the only complete review of this show you'll find at this point that doesn't sum up to S1ipkn0t RULED and Disturbd was prety good i geuss.

So, what you're here for- Rockstar Mayhem. Or if it's just the setlists scroll to the bottom. My friend and I arrived in the parking lot around 1:50, but with our 'Jump the Line' passes from pre-ordering tix, skipped probably 30 to 60 minutes of waiting in line to get inside just after 2 (doors). Another friend met us right as we got inside and sarcastically said "so what rockstars are you gonna meet today Tony?". Its essentially a Disneyland fastpass to get into the venue. Congradulations, if you've read this far without skipping you have a decent attention span.

We brought a backpack with some chips and water, and got as many free half sized cans of Rockstar Fruit Punch as you'd ever want. Huge props to Pavo's water bottle cap trick, I ended up spending $0 in the venue. Also a good amount of free posters, a couple CD samplers and free programs that don't suck.

I'm almost sure that the Jager stage was last years Ozzfest 2nd stage. Not like Ozzfest never had a Hot Topic second stage either. Or all but 3 of the 13 bands. I really won't be missing Ozzfest at all this year, since I got the whole experience and more, and I don't need to see solo Ozzy a 3rd year in a row. Any other band Oz would happen to tour in is a completely different story.

As a super-deluxe bonus, who do we see as we are walking to the parking lot but.... Brann Dailor? This guy must stalk us (ha), 3rd time we've met him. Always me and the same dude. We got another picture and discussed some things we've been curious about, little quirks on their albums, plans in the near future and whatnot.

So Mastodon, the reason I spent 70 bucks on a ticket, ends up being the only performance at the Shoreline you'll ever see with general admission to everyone (including lawn) in the seats. But I have no reason to fret since, to make a long story short, I ended up front and center on the rail for the entire set. At the fucking Shoreline. A place where, you don't get in the front row without paying upwards of 500 dollars or knowing and/or blowing someone. Great set, they didn't play Blood & Thunder, which for me is like Maiden cutting Run to the Hills for some of you going 'do we really need to hear it again?'. Got the setlist and a Bill pick. Matt Pike was sidestage while they were playing. Also during the line 'an ocean turns yellow' my friend and I both pointed at a security guard in a piss yellow shirt and Troy got a good kick out of it

The Wolf is Loose
Crystal Skull
Capillarian Crest
Colony of Birchmen
Circle Cysquatch
Aqua Dimentia
Iron Tusk >
March of the Fire Ants

After getting boo's for saying "we're unlike any other band on this tour because we are proudly christian" or something to that extent, Underoath closed their set and Diary of a Madman started to blare over the Machine fuckin P.A....Maybe I do wanna see Ozzy this summer... no he never plays that one anymore. Machine Head comes on to the home crowd with what I'm guessing was an extended set, because this would be their home gig, and anyone that wanted to see Dragonforce would not be around anyhow.

Clenching the Fists of Dissent
Hallowed Be Thy Name

Disturbed was way less intense this time around, compared to Ozzfest 06. The sound wasn't as good, not to mention the singer not really giving a shit if anybody likes what they're hearing. It began with him being wheeled out on a dolly in a straight jacket as the 10th member of Slipknot, impersonating the Justin Hawkins character from Lambs of God or whatever that movie was called. Review diareah right there. Anyway, it might have been a good idea if he put a little more energy into it, but it just didn't come off. Please fill me in if you have the full setlist. Incomplete, but in order-

10,000 Fists
Inside the Fire
Down With the Sickness

Ahh Slipknot. I've really stopped caring if the maggots are just angry 13 year olds being exploited or not, not worrying about what they put out and feel no need to critique them. I didn't stick around long enough to find out how fun yelling people = shit is, but this is alot of fun

Corey Taylor: "I swear this new album is gonna fucking rip your head off"
Maggots: "woooooo"
Corey Taylor: "You guys wanna fuckin hear a new one?"
Tony D: (in the style of sponge bob square pants chanting jellyfishing, jellyfishing etc...) "Psycosocial, psycosocial, psycosocial!"
Corey Taylor: "PSYCOSOCIAL"

I guess modern prog metal has changed my 13 year old beliefs. I now have some faith in humanity, at least that people>shit.
Should be complete now, thanks to wizzbang

Machine Head is playing Hallowed be Thy Name at non-off dates? Are you fucking serious? Oh god this is sweet.

mankvill 07-13-2008 09:30 AM

Woo, Hallowed Be Thy Name.

I think if I was guaranteed that they'd play that, I'd go to this.

rjturtle9 07-13-2008 09:41 AM

yes!!! gonna go see this today :rocker::light:

JRA 07-13-2008 11:40 AM

I'd rather hear Machine Head break out some old Vio-lence that Hallowed Be Thy Name (Especially now that Phil Demmel's in the band)

nuraman00 07-13-2008 12:45 PM

Can anyone fill in the rest of the setlist for Slipknot and Disturbed?

TonyD 07-13-2008 01:00 PM

Yeah also since I just heard this a month and a half ago as an original. It was still pretty cool, I'm pretty sceptical with Maiden covers but I was especially surprised that Machine Head pulled it off.
....Maybe I do wanna see Ozzy this summer... no he never plays that one anymore.
It's sad. I've thought Diary of a Madman is the high point of his entire career, but I've never heard any of it played live. He needs to breakout SATO or Litttle Dolls.

Red Chord setlist? Or more importantly; what time did they go on?

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 04:36 AM.
