I wasn't going to make a thread for this originally but hot turkey head said fuck it, so here it is

It is the first time Metallica has played Ecucador so the greatest hitz makes sense

HackedUpForBBQ 03-19-2014 04:21 PM

Greatest hits set or not, these by request sets have still beaten the hell out of the set I got when I saw them on the Death Magnetic tour

Maideneer 03-19-2014 05:40 PM

I'm calling BS on the by request sets. It's all been a ploy to make the fan feel 'involved' somehow.

When every show is going to end the same exact way the last tour did with the NEM -> Sandman -> Creeping -> rotating song -> Seek and then also include the Orion -> One -> Bell Tolls sequence and then on top of that have Puppets come in as the 2nd song again...I'm not buying any of it.

I think that is Lars setting it up to be easy for the band, I was looking at the next show and Disposable Heroes is on the final cut, We'll see if it actually makes it or not

Maideneer 03-19-2014 07:18 PM

Ok, so that song will be the rotating one for that show, big whoop. Bet the rest of the set is the same give or take one other song.

Are you talking about the show at the HSBC arena in november of 2009? We got Creeping Death, No Remorse, Damage Inc, Blitzkrieg and Phantom Lord. Hardly bad choices if you ask me. That was a great show.

As for the current set, If you're going to see Metallica and don't want to hear Blackened, Master, Sanitarium, Lightning, Justice, Fade To Black, Bell Tolls, Battery and Creeping Death why the hell are you seeing them? I'm fine with the "fans choices" since those are all great songs. It's better than having a fucked up set with all three Unforgivens in it or stuff off of St Anger.

I guess what gets me about this request thing is not the songs they have chosen so far, they are all awesome songs (maybe not NEM so much) but that fans are wasting a chance for something rare, maybe even never played before to be performed (and I think Metallica would honor the votes if something like that happened) The Frayed Ends of Sanity? To Live is to Die? Fixxxer? These are songs up for the taking, even just one would be insanely awesome to hear, and Metallica most likely won't offer something like this again

I almost think they should have said something like "Hey for our upcoming tour we are going to do 12 set staples + the new song

Staples
1. Seek and Destroy
2. For Whom The Bell Tolls
3. Fade to Black
4. Creeping Death
5. Battery
6. Master of Puppets
7. Blackened
8. One
9. Enter Sandman
10. Sad But True
11. Nothing Else Matters
12. Fuel
13. The Lords of Summer

That gives the fans 5 songs to pick from; granted a majority would vote for other hits like Roam, Orion, etc. but there would be a greater chance of a rarity being voted on if the fans knew for sure the "hits" would be played

These sets aren't surprising at all, 98% of Metallica fans want to hear Sad But True, For Whom the Bell Tolls and One, we forget that the people screaming for deep cuts are just a very loud 2%. Also, the turnover at Metallica shows is insane, it's always a massive amount of first-time fans who aren't jaded after seeing them 10 times like some of us have. Most Metallica fans don't give a shit about Frayed Ends of Sanity and Dyers Eve, that's how mainstream fandom works. I was looking at the setlist selections a while back and the only song that sticks out that the band doesn't play a lot that people were asking for was Whiskey in the Jar.

The fans choose the songs not the order of the set. The order of the songs is up to Metallica. So if all the songs you mentioned make the final cut, what's the big deal if they put them in the same order or not? What other spot would you put Sandman in? The spot before the encore is perfect for it. Seek & Destroy is obviously their concert closer at this point, so if it makes the final vote where else in the set do you think they would play it? I'm not sure what you're talking about with the Orion/One/Bell Tolls sequence as I don't recall those three songs being played one after the other that often. Having Master in the second spot is great since the people always go nuts for the song and most in attendance probably aren't expecting it that soon in the show.

So, some may not be getting the songs they want but like Chris MS said, those are a very vocal minority. Metallica is going for what is getting the majority vote and we can't do anything about that. At least they're trying to do something the please the people that will see them this year.

Well, many of these dates are festivals, so...

I'm not jaded after seeing them three times and I hate a lot of the troo methul hate they got/get, but these sets are just boring. Go figure, Blackened is my favorite song of all times by any musician, so...
