Informal Survey: Politics & Metal
Hey guys, I'm writing a paper on metal bands that express political messages. Just want to cover all my bases, and would really appreciate your help.

If a band is in anyway engaged with politics, list them here. I have some obvious ones already: Megadeth, Anthrax, Napalm Death, Lamb of God, Nevermore...

Basically just looking for bands that might sing about political topics, have political images on their album artwork or merchandise, or express political messages in other ways (music videos, compilation albums, magazine interview, etc).

Thanks for your help.

EDIT: I'm submitting to a journal, and would love readers if anyone is interested.

Is it strictly limited to just metal bands or can we include hardcore/grind bands too? Because those are everywhere.

Also: post more ya dingus

Hardcore and grind are acceptable, but maybe denote that like this:

Napalm Death (grind)
Pro-Pain (crossover)
Agnostic Front (hardcore)

And I would post more, but grad school sucks time. :bouville:

Wasn't W.A.S.P.'s The Headless Children mostly political based?

Havok is a libertarian metal band. And I know Jeff hanneman and Kerry king once said they listened to rush limbo in an interview. System of a down is very political. Disturbed is occasionally too. A7x also

Ministry's last three albums before their recent fake retirement were a scathing indictment of GW.

There's a shitload more to list, but that was the first thing that came to mind. I'll try to post more later.

And quit making excuses not to post. Having four kids and a demanding career sucks way more time than grad school, and I still post from time to time around here. :finger:

Motorhead has been pretty political in a broader sense for the past 25 years or so. Look up the lyrics to their Brave New World.

Slayer, for better or worse (worse IMO), was pretty politically involved after 87.

Gamma Ray's No World Order album is pretty political I'd say.

Sabbath should also be filed under obvious (War Pigs, After Forever, Into The Void, Electric Funeral, Cornucopia).

Manks forgot Terrorizer ;)

Cattle Decapitation has some pretty strong political and ethical views (obviously).

Death's "Spiritual Healing" was all about some of the major political issues of the day.

Clutch can get fairly political from time to time, although they keep it fairly light.

Gojira are fairly political.

Lots of punk bands fit this description as well, from Dead Kennedys (is there a more opinionated person on this planet than Jello Biafra?) to The Exploited, my favorite hardcore group from back in they heyday of hardcore.

The most politically-charged band I know of is an outfit called Consolidated. They're militantly vegan, lesbian / gay supporting super left wing rappers with an industrial edge to their music. Definitely not metal, but extremely edgy and outspoken as hell. They used to let people get up on the mic after their shows and espouse their views while the audience either cheered wildly or jeered with hate - I suspect many shows ended up in near riots or at least some violence. Never saw them live, but I bet it would've been interesting.
