Black Sabbath -- Mansfield, MA -- August 12th, 2013

Got to the venue and tailgaited awhile, since I haven't heard anything that made Andrew WK worth busting my ass to get in for! Luckily we timed it perfectly - as soon as we found our seats, he said "Thanks for letting me DJ for you tonight" and he was gone!

After a pretty short break, the lights went down and Ozzy's evil laugh came over the PA and it was time for Sabbath!

While Ozz was very animated and chatty, as has been posted from prior shows, things like "key" and "pitch" mean little to him, but somehow he makes it all work!

And Tony Iommi is justified in his "Guitar God" status! Geezer Butler is amazing as well. Tommy Clufetos was good on the skins, but I thought giving him a solo in the set was just adding insult to injury regarding the whole Bill Ward fiasco.

The setlist was solid - the same as previous shows, except that the inevitable trimming has begun - "Methademic" was AWOL.

SETLIST:

1. War Pigs
2. Into the Void
3. Under the Sun/Every Day Comes and Goes
4. Snowblind
5. Age of Reason
6. Black Sabbath
7. Behind the Wall of Sleep
8. N.I.B.
9. End of the Beginning
10. Fairies Wear Boots
11. Rat Salad
12. Drum Solo
12. Iron Man
14. God Is Dead?
15. Dirty Women
16. Children of the Grave

Encore:
17. Paranoid (with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Intro)

The trimming began a few shows ago.

The whole DJ thing is pretty disappointing and baffling to be honest:
-It gets Andrew W.K. a minimal amount of exposure. How many concert-goers are going to look up his material after the show, especially since he's not playing his own music live or on the PA?
-It's a waste of money to hire him because he's not doing anything that some random person working at the arena couldn't do.
-The 5 or so people in the audience who know who he is and are actually a little bit excited about him opening the show will be massively disappointed if they failed to read anywhere that he's only doing a DJ set.

My conclusion: Andrew W.K. is doing this for free (or peanuts) and hoping that his name gets out there despite him just being a D.J.

My second conclusion: Give me a live band damn it!

And yeah, Ozzy's singing...It didn't stop his 2010 solo show from being one of the best shows I saw and I'm sure Black Sabbath on the 14th will be just as good.

The solo is really just to give the rest of the band a break more than anything.

I wouldn't think too much into the drum solo. Sabbath has been doing that live for years, it's just a regular spot in the show. It's certainly not an insult to Bill in anyway. Bill doesn't need Sabbath to try and make him look bad, he did a damn fine job of that on his own when he didn't participate in the reunion because "the money wasn't enough".

I also feel similarly about the drum solo....while it is a slight eyebrow-raiser to give not-Bill-Ward a solo spotlight, I am enough of a fan of drums in general that I would still be into it.

I was checking Craigslist and a couple of boards yesterday to see if anyone was looking to unload a reasonably-priced ticket, but I didn't find anything. Oh well. I stayed home and played the new album on my stereo, which I continue to like a lot.

Yep. Plus it's pretty obvious to me that the drum solo is a very necessary break for Ozzy, and probably not an unwelcome one to Geezer or Tony. I mean, those guys are in their mid-60's, and their drummer is barely over 30. It just makes sense.

Agreed. This, and the fact, imo, that the whining about Bill should stop.

But ok, I'll admit it: I like Sabbath so much, that I think every lineup has at least a few good songs. Not troo, huh? :( *cries and sobs in corner*
