High on Fire -- Oakland, CA -- June 27th, 2013

The only way to really experience High on Fire is up close and dangerous. I'd never been to The Uptown before last night but it's split longways into a bar and a venue, which made it seem all the more hot and stuffy. The line of the night was Pike saying, "holy shit it's hot in here, somebody call the hotline".
I've been spoiled to see these guys about 10 times now, but this show was a standout along with the pre-Snakes tour in Sacramento. 9/10

Serums Of Liao :rocker:
Frost Hammer (always solid)
10,000 Years :bliss:
Devilution
Last
Fertile Green :rocker:
Speedwolf
Rumors of War
DII
Fury Whip
Madness of an Architect
Snakes for the Divine

High on Fire is one of my favorite bands ever but I think it's time to change up the set a bit!

JRA 06-28-2013 12:11 PM

That and they need to bring in more new songs.

It should look like this:

SPIRITUAL RIGHTS
SERUMS OF LIAO
SNAKES FOR THE DIVINE
TURK
ANOINTING OF SEER
ROMULUS & REMUS
10,000 YEARS
BASTARD SAMURAI
FURY WHIP
KING OF DAYS
FERTILE GREEN
RUMORS OF WAR
WARHORN
FROST HAMMER
MADNESS OF AN ARCHITECT
=============
EYES & TEETH
BLOOD FROM ZION
DEVILUTION

Did you get there in time to check out Grayceon?

TonyD 06-28-2013 12:33 PM

Yeah we pretty much caught their whole set but I couldn't tell you what they played. We planned on catching the whole show but we were scrambling to find someone to give an extra ticket to.

TonyD 06-28-2013 12:37 PM

I somewhat agree with you guys, I could probably never hear Devilution and Rumors again and be happy. But I can't see them ever playing more than 75 minutes.
And of the songs listed, I've heard them play all of those (except the new ones) at some point.

I've yet to see 10,000 Years live but would love to. Not seen HOF since the Pre-Snake's tour.

:(

If Sleep can do 2 hours, High on Fire can do 90 minutes dammit. They're at the point now where they have too many top-tier songs for only 75 minutes. Maybe they'll finally up the set length when Matt delivers his baby.

Well I'm saying that because of the intensity of their music. They might be able to do a 90-105 minute set here or there but there's no way in hell they could do more than 75 minutes night after night the way that they tour.

The nature of the internet gets us thinking in terms of black and white. It's great that Rush does 2 sets a night and that Zeppelin or GnR have done 3+ hour sets. But that's 2-3 hours of ebb and flow, light and shade, Welcome to the Jungle and Patience. Not 2-3 hours of PERMAGLAZE REFLECTS THIS WORLD DISTANT TO THE THAWED LIFE, FROST CLAN BLOWS THE WAR HORN WITHOUT A FEAR OR GUISE.
Asking for anything more is like complaining that Usain Bolt doesn't do marathons.

My counterargument to that is High On Fire does have light and shade. And they've had it as far back as 2007 with the title track of Death is This Communion. From then on they've added more shade with Bastard Samurai, King of Days and Warhorn. Hell they've had the occasional doomier moments going back to Art of Self-Defense, if anything its the faster songs that are the odd ones out of High On Fire's catalogue.

By the way, I iTunes-time-calculated that set and it comes out to 1:43:57. Factor in the breaks between songs, re-fueling by water/beer/smoothie and the occasional stage rap and that's what...112-115 minutes?
