Enslaved -- Baltimore, MD -- January 31st, 2013

Full review (pix coming this evening of merch and bands)

summary: eventually got pretty packed (about 350 ppl, including bands and staff)
Ancient VVisdom- sounded great, not metal, def different from my usual likes. I enjoyed their new album (streamed previously), so I thought those in particular sounded very powerful

Royal Thunder- looked like hipsters. Halestorm meets Heart vocals meets bad songs. I was kinda liking the first two songs, but overall their songs were lacking, IMO. The vocals sounded GREAT, but lyrics were...well they had a lot of whoa oh ohs (I'm not going to comment about Halestorm lyrics at this point!). I was kinda disappointed considering the hype I have heard about these guys.

Pallbearer- Droney, heaviest band of the night. Unremarkable, boring songs IMO. I think it woulda been ok if I was high, but it really was not really my kinda sound. Crowd seemed into it, overall.

Enslaved- sounded very good. I was unfamiliar with them overall, but the ones I did know (um ,...new ones) sounded pretty good. Amp problem at some point yielded horrible joke telling to appease the crowds, but thankfully they got another to use. Big pit on Immigrant Song, and pits on other songs that had kinda fast parts, but seemed more headbanging songs and def not moshing songs. /rant
Overall they easily sounded the most professional.

Not a bad way to start 2013 concerts!

Damn, 100 minutes of Enslaved? Yes please.

Thanks for the setlist, gonna be seeing them tomorrow and I can't wait. :rocker:

adamclark52 02-01-2013 12:24 PM

That's a GREAT Enslaved setlist!!!! I'd put Ethica Odini as the opener.

I'm on my crappy cell phone right now, I'll give more input later.

MPF 02-01-2013 12:28 PM

Holy fuck I can't wait for Tuesday!

W0unds 02-01-2013 12:28 PM

That is a good Enslaved set, I would be happy with that. Still disappointed they are playing the exact same night as Meshuggah in Toronto.

Id hit up Meshuggah personally, but im biased due to having a love affair with that band for over 10 years.

There's a really good selection of songs here. Nothing from the older albums I haven't seen on past tours except Convoys to Nothingness, which is pretty much the only song I'd want to hear from Monumensíon. I'm really glad that As Fire Swept Clean the Earth has lasted into this tour and REALLY glad that they're playing the Watcher again. That's probably my favorite Enslaved song. Segueing from Covoys to Nothingness into As Fire Swept Clean the Earth must have been epic! It does suck that they're pretty much playing one song from each album. But when you have ten or so albums there's no way to avoid that.

The issue I have is the sequencing. RIITIIR is a terrible opener, and Ruun and the Watcher aren't very good follow-ups. I'd like to see them play all three songs but later in the set. I'd stick with Ethica Odini as the opener. The Immigrant Song I'd just get rid of, it's a good cover I'd much rather hear an Enslaved song. I'm really surprised that Fusion of Sense and Earth isn't in the set anymore. I figured that would be the staple song off Ruun for the rest of their careers.

Lastly, did the "unknown" song sound like a new Enslaved song or a pre-Mardraum Enslaved song? It's pretty easy to tell which era it would've been from even if you had no idea what it was. It could've also been Heimvegen off the Sleeping Gods EP.

I can't see them in Toronto next week because of work. But it's a solid set.

I'm not sure, but from the setlist I spied on the soundboard I saw 'Fenrir" in parenthesis, so it mighta been that, but not being really familiar with their material I can't say for sure. It certainly sounded like something older (based on the Odin song).

Assuming they have the same setlist, def post what improvements you find out!

Fenris would be awesome.

How much were the Pallbearer and Royal Thunder CDs?

daimonos 02-02-2013 12:28 PM

Good set. Nice to see some of the new songs of course, but I kind of wish they were playing Death in the Eyes of Dawn or Forsaken. Convoys to Nothingness is an awesome plus as well. Kind of disappointed that there's no Ground, but I can see how they've tired that one out. I'm hoping the unknown song was an old black metal song of theirs, I have a friend who saw them at Barge to Hell and said they were pulling out all kinds of tracks from Eld and so forth. Either way, Enslaved always puts on a hell of a show and I'm beyond excited to see them tomorrow night.

JBR_XVI 02-03-2013 11:06 AM

I was at this show.

Pallbearer were truly outstanding. 'Sorrow And Extinction' was my favorite album released last year. The new song they played sounded very promising. Their setlist was:

"An Offering Of Grief"
"The Legend"
"Foreigner"
new song

Hopefully they also play "Devoid Of Redemption" when I see them again in Richmond in a few weeks.

Enslaved was really good. I really enjoyed 'RIITIIR', so it was great hearing some of the best tracks from that album live. It was neat that they played "Convoys..." I actually couldn't even remember what album that song was from because 'Monumension' is the album I've listened to the least from them. I was bummed towards the end of their set though. On their set list, it read "Allfadr Odinn/Slaget I Skogen." They only played "Allfadr Odinn." Then they played their cover of "Immigrant Song," which I didn't like at all. To clear something up, they did not play another song in between the Led Zep cover and their encore. They just went into a brief proggy jam as that cover song winded down. Also on their setlist, the encore had "Fenris" in parentheses before "Isa." Cato came on and did a brief drum solo, then they went straight into "Isa." It would've been awesome if they played the intro part of "Fenris" as a segue into "Isa." How can one not headbang to that riff/drumbeat?

Ommie 02-03-2013 12:11 PM

I just saw this last night, and the setlist for Enslaved was pretty much exactly the same, only they played Fenris after Isa for the encore. Overall good show, enjoyed every band except for Pallbearer.

Shit, they've been closing with Isa for YEARS! That's a nice change.

How was the attendance? I was pissed I couldn't make it
How was the attendance? I was pissed I couldn't make it
I couldn't really tell because I was upfront for most of the concert. I first got in when Ancient Vvisdom started and there was barely ~70 people, but the place filled up throughout the night. I want to say the max attendance was somewhere between 300-400 people but I'm not sure.

Also, random sidenote, there was A LOT more women than I was expecting at this concert. A good amount of the first row during Enslaved were women wearing battle jackets.

Too funny.. I saw this show in Philly the night before and thought this little shrine thingy belonged to the venue.. guess it belongs to Enslaved!

Excellent information! Thank you for the clarification.

(Pallbearer seemed like the crowd was into them, but I wasn't diggin them. )

ah, need to correct my notes with that Enslaved info~~

well that's Royal Thunder's merch (CD) in it, so I am assuming it is theirs

Yup, I have a feeling a lot of people couldn't make it because of the weather though. It had been snowing all day and the roads were gnarly that night; we were going 40 on the highway on the way to the venue.

MPF 02-04-2013 12:27 PM

I was wrong earlier in this thread. the MN show is tonight and I'm interviewing Royal thunder at 6:45. I can't wait for tonight!

I am trying to remember, cause I briefly looked at the Pallbearer merch. I think Pallbearer CD was 10 or 15. Probably 15, as Ancient VVisdom and Enslaved had $15 CDs too.
