As I Lay Dying –- London, Ontario –- December 4th, 2012
This is my first review/setlist post on Metalsetlists so please forgive any inconsistencies or deviations from the standard format.
Venue: Cowboys Ranch
Opening Bands: Caym, Baptized in Blood, Memphis May Fire
This was an offdate from the “Monster Energy Outbreak Tour” which suited me just fine as I have little interest in most of the bands on that tour. This date was originally slated to have Suicide Silence on the bill before the tragic passing of Mitch Lucker. As such there was a bit more of an emotional atmosphere to the whole event and plenty of Suicide Silence or Mitch Lucker memorial shirts in the crowd.
I have never driven down to London for a concert before nor have I been to this venue before so I was surprised at the small size (capacity around 700). It is clearly a country bar and I was told on entry “no moshing for you chief” due to my steel toed boots, not sure how they planned to enforce that. :tp:
Anyways first band was a local band from Toronto called Caym, who play some decent groove metal. Not bad for an opener, wouldn’t mind seeing them again. Not sure on their set.
Next up was London thrash metallers Baptized In Blood. I had caught these guys once before at Heavy TO and they did not disappoint with their performance. They got the first real pits of the night going and the crowd was really into them. These guys were signed to Roadrunner for a while, not sure what happened but I would like to see them get some more exposure. Spoke with Johl (their vocalist) after the show, really cool guy – it was his 4 year old sons first time seeing them play which was pretty awesome. :rocker:
Next up was Memphis May Fire, I had only checked out one or two of their songs before and wasn’t sure what to expect. They really weren’t to my liking and the venue seemed to fill with scene bros/girls during their set. Their live energy was pretty good and the crowd seemed to like them but I wasn’t a fan of their clean vocals, their preachy message between songs nor their obviously subwoofer powered breakdowns. They also had this unpleasant drum solo with dubstep backing which I found to be very annoying. :barf:
During the setup for AILD a roadie tripped and half knocked one of their banners down, the crowd gave him a resounding “you fucked up” chant while they had to get a ladder to fix it.
Finally it was time for As I Lay Dying to take the stage and they absolutely killed it. I have seen them live twice before but never in a venue this small. The pits were brutal and there was tons of crowd surfing, the security seemed a little overwhelmed – I don’t think they expected it to get this crazy.
Their new tracks sounded super heavy live particularly Paralyzed, and a Greater Foundation is an awesome circle pit anthem. My only complaint is just hearing one song from “The Powerless Rise” which was a great album in my opinion.
Anyways an excellent performance from AILD, can’t wait to see them again. They are one of the best and most consistent metalcore bands out there both on album and live.

I know, it seemed a bit on the low side as well. It looks like they are only playing these 2 on this tour.
