Dark Funeral -- Montreal, Quebec -- September 30th, 2012
Venue: Club Soda
Opening band: Vadimvon Morbid Angel were stuck at the border and couldn't cross to Canada, but the show still happened without them. The other bands' set times were extented and the people who had their tickets were partially refunded (10$). I had trouble getting to the show because the metro had broke down due to a power cut. Me and my friend were actually stuck in our subway station for about an hour. We were scared we would miss Grave, but when we got there Vadimvon were playing their last song. It sounded like some sort of epic death metal. Nothing too impressive. Next was the band I had came to see. The swedes from Grave were actually so good that they totally made up for Morbid Angel's cancellation. Their sound was enormous and aggressive and they had tons of energy on stage. They also communicated very well with the semi-thin crowd (a lot of people decided to get refunded, but the venue was still half full, which means the show would probably have been sold out if MA had played). Speaking of the crowd, it was pretty receptive. Everyone was yelling and headbanging and there were some continuous small pits. I didn't enjoy Grave's show as much as when they played the Petit Campus and bursted out the full Into the Grave album, but I still had tons of fun. The song selection was very different and pretty cool. The new songs sounded great and "Eroded" was an excellent surprise. After such an inpressive performance, I was too satisfied and I was kinda bored by Dark Funeral's ordinary style of black metal (imo). They still gave a good show with their (almost gimmicky) armor and corpse paint. I have to say their drummer was pretty entertaining with his furious constant blasting. Their new vocalist did a good job in emulating Emperor Magus Caligula, but I thought he tried a bit too hard to look evil. Sometimes it got ridiculous. Anyway, I still moderately enjoyed their set. My highlights were the two songs they played from the first record and the two last ones. My cellphone broke, so the Dark Funeral set is probably out of order and maybe missing one song. Sucks that Morbid Angel couldn't play but I'm pretty jealous of those longer sets! Especially the Grave one, their set went by so quickly when I saw them.

Yep, that Grave set ruled. At least I've seen Morbid Angel previously (though not headlining, and both times their set was cut short due to wireless amplification problems) at Heavy MTL 2011 and MDF 2012. |
That Grave set is really nice looking, hope to see the same thing tonight in TO.

Yeah that sucks about Morbid Angel. I wonder which one of the members has record, that's usually the reason why bands get turned away at the border (like Nile, I think one of them has a DUI or something).

My budy texted me and told me about MA's abscence, so I didn't go. Maybe I should have now that I see that Grave set!!
