Kreator -- Kansas City, MO -- September 16th, 2012

This is the old-school heavy metal tour of the year for sure. Swallow The Sun is old-school heavy (despite not being old), Accept was old-school rocking, and Kreator was old-school brutality! Despite a few sound issues for some of the bands, it was a solid night overall.

Hellevate opened the night as people were still coming in. They only had time for about four songs, but they made the most of it. The whole band is really animated, especially the vocalist. He reminds me of a young Bobby Blitz. The riffing was solid and they had a nice thick bass sound, but it all kinda went to moot because not a ton of the crowd was feeling them. Tonight was their album release show, too, so it kinda sucks they didn't get at least a bit longer. Great warm-up, though.

It was my first time seeing Swallow The Sun since they played with Soilwork, Darkane and Warbringer back in 2008. This band seems to get on really odd tours. But they were still really heavy. They played six songs, but only two of them had any clean vocals - they catered their set to appeal to the fans of this tour, obviously. When all the instruments just started riffing together in one of their painfully heavy and slow breakdowns, it was so awesome. Swallow The Sun here and then Katatonia a few days ago? I'm in melancholic death/doom heaven. Awesome.

Up next was the legendary Accept. "Legendary" is a fair title, because they've absolutely earned it. A very high energy performance from all members of the band, spot-on sound and great crowd interaction. They were good and loud without being overbearing. The lead guitars came through perfectly, especially during the solos. The new vocalist also sounded fantastic. The band didn't spend that long chatting up the crowd in between songs, but it's okay because they spent most of their time rocking out! Lots of singing along with them. Old-school awesome!

Kreator was very punishing and very brutal, but unfortunately the sound problems that had been reported for previous shows were prevalent here. About half of their set, I could barely hear the guitars when they weren't soloing. Fortunately, this didn't deter from the overall performance that much. Their mix of likable new songs and classic ones went over very well with the crowd and there were several large mosh and circle pits during their set. They unfortunately cut out Betrayer, but the rest of the set was the same. Mille's vocals were great and the whole band sounded awesome for being able to play so fast. If you see Kreator, expect to mosh!

It wasn't even that bad. I'm still a little disappointed by the turnout. Not that is was bad, but way less than I expected.

I still stand by my belief that Kreator wants to sound the way they do

Yeah

The most people were there during Accept and the beginning of Kreator. Kreator's wall of sound probably drained a lot of people and they started to filter out. An okay turnout for a Sunday night, though.

damn. sorry to hear about the sound issues mankz. Kreator sounded great when I saw them in 2009. And we got "riot of violence" at our show :D

The sound issues weren't enough to mess with my enjoyment of Kreator, though. They still ruled!

Kreator are getting super lazy with their setlists arent they

Onioner 09-17-2012 04:04 PM

They better not drop Betrayer in LA! :flame:

I mean sure, there are a lot of older songs I would've loved to hear, but I was okay with the set. Maybe one less Phantom Antichrist song. I liked their pick of songs better than Overkill's on their last tour.

Must you mention it in every thread? Besides, they did that the whole tour.

You're right, most people were there during Accept... this just proves that 'those' people were not there to bang their head or enjoy some REAL metal.

I too wish there was more of a crowd. I'm glad there were some fellow metalheads to help start up a pit, Kreator deserves no less than what we provided.

Maybe next time I see Kreator I will be lucky enough to catch them with Morbid Angel and Nile?? Yea, that's the tour that Europe is getting. I envy the Euro metal scene!! The coasts aren't too bad either, but most big name metal acts scare away from KC. Probably because of people too insecure to have a good time a metal show.

Overall I had a great time, and it sounded fine to me. Metal always sounds better from where you are suppose to hear it... THE PIT.

Might wanna wait until next year. We have some killer stuff coming through Lawrence and KC in the last few months of 2012!

Death Angel has played here sooo much in the past few years! Haha. I think like since February of last year, they've been here four times?

Unlikely, unfortunately. College is being unkind and it doesn't look like the scheduling will work out.

If only they would just play all of Act III.. is that asking too much??

Tell me about it..

Death angel play here way too much as well. 2010 they played here with Soil Work at the observatory by my house, 2011 they played 4-5 headlining shows all within a 30 minute drive from my house(I ended up going to one of them), They played in 2011 at at Scion Rock Fest(ran into mark bunch of times, chatted a little, cool dude), played a couple more headlining shows here and there as well, they just recently played here at the ventura theatre not too long ago… Oh, and I saw them open up for sepultura five months ago..

Oh and i plan on seeing them perform all of the "ultra Violence" in like 3 weeks..

As i said before..

Death angel play here way too much…but hey i'm not complaining..

anomynous 09-19-2012 09:55 AM

In the mean time, Death Angel has only been in St Louis once in the past couple of years, and it was opening for Volbeat.

I want to see the Ultra Violence dammit

Their show at the Riot Room last February was NUTS! It was so packed and people were going crazy the entire time.

Considering that this year they're playing all of The Ultra-Violence, I don't think it is. We'll have to see when the anniversary rolls around.
