Mayhem Festival - - Houston, TX -- July 11th, 2012

Rambling of a Rabid slayer fan.....

How far will you go for Slayer? Shit I just drove 220 miles (one way) from San Antonio to the Woodlands Texas Pavilion in Houston area. That is a long ass road trip, but Slayer is worth it. It seem like I am in that situation a lot lately. The Verizon Wireless Amphitheater closed down in the San Antonio area (Selma, TX), so a lot of festivals are skipping San Antonio……FUCK! Now San Antonio Metal Heads have to drive far to see Festival concerts. The last time I saw Slayer, I had to drive to Austin for the Fun-Fun-Fun Fest in November 2011 which was around 140 miles round trip.

I guess I can’t complain too much. I won this ticket by taking a survey on Mayhem Fest website, so I got a free ticket and VIP access. The VIP access was supposed to be “no escort needed” all access to production and backstage areas, but I think the ticket office messed up. I got a regular VIP access that required escort. I just decided to not even try going backstage. Other people with VIP passes said it was almost impossible to get backstage. You had to request exact issuer of VIP pass and have them “escort” you backstage. Too much hassle! I was perfectly happy just watching the bands on stage. I did not feel like jumping though hoops of fire just to meet some bands.

To be honest, the only reason I went to this concert was to see Slayer. I literally have seen Slayer 4 decades: The 80’s, 90’s, 00’s, and 10’s. Every time Slayer gets to central Texas I go, even if it means missing work. Slayer is more important than any job! Just call me a rabid Slayer fan. If Slayer did not play this fest, I would not have gone. Don’t get me wrong, the other “major” bands Anthrax, Motorhead, and Slipknot are great. It is just SLAYER is my favorite band.

The weirdest thing for me is that this is the first time I saw Slayer in a reserved seat. I have always seen Slayer in the pit or general admission floor. I am use to fighting and clawing my way to the front rail. This time I was more relaxed. It was nice not getting bruised, bloodied and sweaty while watching Slayer. It was a different feel for me to watch Slayer in a relaxed state. I liked it, and now that I am 40 years old, I might consider buying reserved seating in the future.

Slayer Set

Darkness of Christ (prerecorded intro)
Disciple

Hate Worldwide

I'll try to add links to pictures when I find my cable for camera.....next stop Iron Maiden in August!

Nice to see another old guy on the board, next month I am driving 340 miles each way to see Iron Maiden so I feel your pain. I have never seen Maiden and have listened to them heavily since 1984 so I feel it must be done, especially as Seventh Son was one of my favorite albums and 340 miles is about the closest to me they have ever come. Fortunately I know people in the town I am going to and on the way back so it's not so bad.
As for sitting versus standing, I had a seat at the Slayer concert last year and this year I had to stand and actually preferred the standing experience. I guess I just can't properly headbang in a chair although I was perfectly happy standing at the back of the standing area as I am too old for the real moshing stuff.

I just turned 51 (WTF!?) this week, and I'm STILL a metalhead, and have travelled overseas just to catch a show!

You're never too old in my opinion!

I respect all you guys for driving so long for shows. I've done it many times, and just like you guys, I always have a great time. 400 miles 1-way for Slayer, countless 250 mile trips to the Boston area, 1200 mile road trip for 3 Biohazard shows, etc.

I get so irritated when I see people here (and other places, too) bitching "Oh, I really wanna see 'X', but I don't wanna drive 2 hours." Pussies!!

400+ mile roadtrip for the first mayhem stop.

You guys are right. It was totally worth it.

I don't have a car so i can't make most shows 2 hours away lol, it all depends on who else is going, the farthest we've ever traveled for a show is 8 hours.

That's the spirit! Mayhem had the good timing to come to my town on my 42nd birthday last week and I am still going strong.

It's understandable if you don't have a car. I just get frusterated when people complain about having to go an hour for a show! Many of us aren;t blessed to live near heavily-played cities.

Slayer merchandise

I haven't seen the slayer shirts yet on other blogs, so I attached link to pictures in Houston. I bought the one with skull in crown of thorns. $30 is expensive, but I only see Slayer once or twice a year, so it is worth every stinking penny.
