Obituary -- Atlanta, GA -- November 21st, 2011
FUCKING OBITUARY HOLY FUCK
So I went to this show not for Obituary (they're probably one of the most boring, mediocre death metal bands I've ever heard; even their two critically acclaimed albums, Slowly We Rot and Cause of Death, are only decent), but for the three local bands! Also, I figured it'd be cool to see Obituary in such a small-ass venue (art gallery where I've seen Witchaven, Wormrot, and Inter Arma), even if I'm not a fan of them on record. Maybe the setting would benefit them. I'm glad as fuck I went. First local was ripping thrashers Sadistic Ritual! They hopped on the show at the last minute, so they only played like 10-15 minutes, but my god they were good! They remind me of old Kreator. I've seen them play one song before opening for Exodus, but that's it. Second local was Spewtilator! I've seen them once before. They are a very popular “deathened” thrash act (I hesitate to call them death-thrash because I hate death-thrash). Good as fuck, just as I expected. Third local was Living Decay! This was my 4th time seeing them, and they were just as good as every other time. They reek of death metal, no-frills all the way. They have a bunch of doomy/mid-tempo passages but I would still hesitate to call them a death-doom band. You guys have to check Living Decay out right now!!! As always, they were entertaining to watch as the drummer does the vocals. Wizzbang-approved  Then the “supergroup” known as Denial Fiend came on stage. Denial Fiend is a death-thrash band through and through. They have the guitarist from Obituary and some other old farts; they've been opening for Obituary on this tour. I left halfway through their set as they were painfully mediocre. I thought they were solid on album but I hated their music tonight. Not that they were bad live or anything... if that makes any sense whatsoever. Finally Obituary came on stage. OH...MY...GOD. As I said before, I'm not an Obituary fan by any means, but they were one of the best live bands I've ever had the opportunity to see! The venue was packed and people were going crazy (including me)! In fact, I was having so much fun that I probably appeared to most people to be hammered. But I was not... I chugged a little whiskey before the show but it didn't affect me at all. IrritatedTrout was right, I don't need to be drunk to enjoy a show! (In fact, if I was drunk, I probably wouldn't have moshed as much.) A lot of people were stage-diving, but because most of the people were in the back of the gallery, and the stage wasn't high at all, the divers mostly just landed on their feet. Internal Bleeding On The Floor List of Dead Blood to Give Find The Arise Chopped in Half/Turned Inside Out Dying Dethroned Emperor (Celtic Frost cover) Threating Skies By The Light The End Complete Slow Death 'Til Death Evil Ways Redneck Stomp Slowly We Rot Also, gotta give props to Neal White, local hardcore promoter, for booking this show! It ran so smoothly. The guys who booked Absu in Boston could learn a thing or two. The show started at 7:30 sharp, and ended at 11:40 five bands later. And Obituary still played 80 minutes! Hell, if it wasn't for fucking Denial Fiend, I'd say this was the best show I've been to this year. |

Opinion invalid. But at least you had fun. I need to see Obituary again. They're one of my favorites. |

Yeah I saw them at Scion Rock Fest too and I was surprised how much I enjoyed them live. A lot of death metal bands I've seen live that I'm not really a fan of always impress me. Hell, I'm not a fan of Anaal Nathrakh but they were solid live. Dying Fetus has also got to be one of the best bands I've ever seen. |
SO...I take it you made it home alright?
