Towards Darkness -- Montreal, Quebec -- October 21st, 2011
Opening band: Bludgeoned
As always at the Katacombes, the concert started 1,5 hour late (around 10:30). Bludgeoned were ok, they play a mix of thrash, punk and stoner/doom. Their riffs were pretty generic, but they had some good ones. They had a female singer, but she sucked: she had no stage presence and she had a powerless raspy scream.
Then, Dopethrone were incredible. For those who don't know them, they play really good sludge/doom in the vein of Weedeater. They sounded heavy and powerful as fuck! Some of the riffs were so heavy that they gave me chills, especially during "Dark Foil". The new songs were excellent, I can't wait for a new album. Easily one of the best stoner/sludge performances I've seen, better than Weedeater themselves in my opinion.
Finally, Towards Darkness came in around 1:00 pm. Half of the crowd had left, but they gave a hell of a show. They played a really dark and cold, keyboard-infused funeral doom metal. The atmosphere was crushing and the melodies were hypnotizing. They played a new song off their new EP and 3 of 4 songs of the new album, which I heard is finished; they're only waiting on the label to release it. Their set lasted over 1,5 hour (there were like 20 people left at the end of the set) and I loved the experience; you don't see bands like this often. If you haven't heard about them, you should definitely check out their album.
