Exhorder -- Austin, TX -- April 16th, 2011

Venue: Emo's (outside stage)

Got to the venue just after local band The Blood Royale was finishing. The place was kind of empty at the beginning of the night, which is not unusual at Emo's. HOD was the next band to go on, they just got up there and play some no-nonsense american black metal. If you like bands like Goatwhore you should check out HOD's album Serpents. After HOD finished we left the venue to get a beer somewhere else and kill some time before Rigor Mortis. We missed Dead Earth Politics while out and came back during Rigor Mortis' sound check. I am not sure about all of their set, but it included these songs:

Rigor Mortis (incomplete)
Demons
Die In Pain :rocker:
Bloodbath (new song)
Vampire
Re-Animator :rocker:
Another New Song
Slow Death

Rigor did not disappoint at all, but the highlight by far was their guitarist, Mike Scaccia. He absolutely stole the show. The crowd was a good mix of younger and older metalheads and Rigor Mortis worked the crowd into quite a frenzy leading to some great old school circle pits. They played two new songs, I think one was called Bloodsoaked or something along those lines. Both of the new songs were some fun old school thrash.

Exhorder was up next and during their sound check a large poster sized photo of Frankie Sparcello was placed on stage next to the drum kit. The venue started to fill up more and once Exhorder started playing it was clear from the get go that the crowd was going to be more intense than for Rigor Mortis. During one song, I cannot recall which, they threw a football into the pit and announced that whoever was holding the ball at the end of the song would get free merch. Total insanity in the pit ensued, but it was all good natured moshing even with the ball at stake things did not get too violent or aggressive. The lead singer from HOD was in the pit during the entire Exhorder set. They had a little instrument change over break during which their drummer pulled out an amazing drum solo. Sometimes I find some drum solos to be unnecessary, but this guy was excellent. After the drum solo they pulled out a Sabbath cover, Into The Void, which is on their second album and sounded great. Another highlight of Exhorder's set was a total awesome surprise when Billy Milano of SOD came out and took over the vocal duties and the band went into SOD's United Forces, the crowd went crazy and everyone up front was screaming along. Kyle mentioned that they had planned on playing a new song, but that the recent events made that impossible. I felt really lucky to have the opportunity to see a couple metal legends rip it up.

Exhorder
Death In Vain
Homicide
Unforgiven
Legions of Death :rocker:
The Law
I am the Cross :rocker:
Drum Solo
Into The Void (Black Sabbath)
United Forces (SOD) with Billy Milano on vocals :rocker:
Cadence of the Dirge
Desecrator
Slaughter in the Vatican :rocker:
Anal Lust

Yay! I'm glad to see they're still playing despite the recent events. I would love that set!!:rocker:

Nice set, and it sounds like it was a good time.

United Forces w/ Milano alone is a thrasher's wet dream, but that whole set is orgasmic. They need to get the fuck over to Chicago.

Jealous as all hell! Glad to see Rigor writing new stuff. Would love to hear Foaming at the Mouth live.

Exhorder set is bad ass. Jakked to finally get to see them.
