Ensiferum - From Afar

This review won't be as long as some of my others have been, primarily because I'm not that vested in this band or genre, and also because it's rather easy to say what I have to say about this album in relatively few words.

This album is fun. Ensiferum are folky as hell, and they are truly in top form on this album. The cool thing is, they are also as thrashy as ever. The musicianship on display here is so good, it almost goes unnoticed due to the catchy medieval tone of the music, which is very much in the vein of something like Amon Amarth (although the overall tone is a lot less dramatic or serious). Make no mistake about it, though - these people can truly shred.

Basically, Ensiferum is not for everyone. If you take your music (or perhaps yourself) too seriously, you may not like this (or them). But if you do like Ensiferum, you will likely be smiling from ear to ear before getting halfway through the first official track (which is track number two - track one is an intro).

I saw this band as an afterthought at Summer Slaughter 2009, and I'm so glad I did. My initial listen to their material (about a year ago - someone gave me some mp3's) had left me underwhelmed, and I was not likely to revisit them again. But once I saw how much fun their set was, and how well these folks played, I was able to enjoy their music for what it is - folky, catchy, technically-impressive-yet-just-plain-old-fun thrash metal about mythical heroes and other such medieval nonsense. Terrific album.

I really LOVE this album. WAY more symphonic than past releases, and without a doubt they truly birthed "Western metal" on the song Stone Cold Metal. Great stuff.

All I've heard is the intro track so far, and I think it's amazing. This will definately be in my top 10 for the end of the year. I am astonished as to how good it is.

Come back and post when you've heard it all. If the freakin' intro got your motor running, then the rest of the album might just make your head explode.

I almost forgot about this album! I just listened to most of the songs and it sounds better than anything theyve put out before. My friend is gonna love this album, hes an even bigger ensiferum fan than i am and is a sucker for the really folkly parts, which is the opposite for me.

Usually I find that in metal folkly parts tend to drag on, but ensiferum has done a great job of creating a perfect balance of both.

I am definetely going to purchase this CD when it is released and I am very excited to hear it in its entirety.

I only wish that their upcoming tour didn't have to fall on a school night :( but neverthelless, i did get to see them at summer slaughter and although they were out of place, they kicked ass!

Amazing album!

i found this to be a really fun album to listen to.

i know the viking thing is getting overplayed, but this is one of the bands who should be able to keep doing it without taking any heat, as they do it really well.

EDIT: btw, you must include album art in your reviews :horns:
