What in the hell are up with these vocals! This is a Killing Joke cover and I've never heard them before. Eh, this is a lame song. That's all I'm gonna say about that.

Woo! Old, fast Metallica. Well, faster. Anyway, the opening riff kind of reminded me of Municipal Waste for some reason. It's definitely not the fastest on Kill 'Em All, but it'll do. It's another by the books thrash song from Metallica. It's okay.

Remember Tomorrow is the Iron Maiden cover that I've already heard on Mandatory Metallica before, but I'm so glad I got to hear it again. Love this song so much, better than the original! Mwahahaha.

Good God! The beginning of Damage Inc. made me think it was from Load or something, but I was damn wrong. This is one of the best Metallica songs i've heard and definitely the most brutal I've ever heard.

Sad But True was, when I first heard it, one of those songs that I knew of when I heard it, but never what it was called or who performed it. I kinda had the same thing with Raining Blood with that opening riff. This, while not a fantastic Metallica song, is just a fun one and I can imagine headbanging to this in concert.

AUGH! I'm a sucker for this intro. I love stuff that builds up to a rockin' speedy song. Woah, James is screaming in this song. I don't think I've evver heard him do it that much! But, damn, this is so good! Barely sounds like Metallica at all, especially those solos.

Ehhh...I don't like slow songs like these from Metallica usually. Meh, that backing guitar gets really annoying to me. And James' vocals. That's about it for this song.

Originally by Thin Lizzy, Whiskey In The Jar was the radio DJ's favorite off of Garage, Inc. and he said he shut off the phones during the song so he could listen to it! To me, this song has a kind of "Old Western" ting to it just a bit. It's very nice. I've never really listened to Thin Lizzy before, but the Metallica version of them certainly doesn't sound too bad!

Blackened: What can I say? It's an awesome song. The soft interlude leading to a nasty (in a good way) rest of the song is just great. I'm a sucker for those "soft beginning, hellaciously fast/heavy song" type of things. I do believe, however, that the drums could've done more and been more faster. That's why I prefer Slayer ultimately. Well, that among other things. :P Classic Metallica!

Couple notes:

1.) My internet should (although I'm still skeptical) be up for good tomorrow evening.
2.) There won't be a MM post for Thursday because I got caught up watching the Olympics and forgot to listen. Go USA!

"Hero..." is disgusting. Everything about it screams "This can't be Metallica". I said "What the hell is this?" out loud at least three times during this song. I wasn't even sure that they were playing Metallica for the longest time. It actually reminded me more of blink-182 for most of the song. Just bad.

I've never actually heard the studio recording for Ecstasy Of Gold, and it's kinda cool. Another solid instrumental song from Metallica. That's about it.

Another weak song. It's not that this song is particularly bad, it's just particularly bland. Nothing special about it at all. The bass does get kind of annoying for me, too.

I guess it's fitting that today is the worst Mandatory Metallica seeing as how yesterday's was the best.

Master of Puppets is a classic by anyone's standards and for good reason. This is what someone could use to define the word "heavy metal". Fast guitars, awesome solos, and an all-around epic sound. Great stuff! Not the best on the MoP CD, but certainly a classic song.

Remember Tomorrow is an Iron Maiden song that Metallica covered for a recent tribute disc to them. I'd never heard the original until I got home. And lemme tell ya, the Metallica version is awesome. The original is good too, but the Metallica version just kicks so much ass. They should cover more Maiden!

Ride The Lightning is such a great album and this opener is fantastic for it. And I'm gonna go ahead and say this is the fastest Metallica song I've ever heard. Anyone know of any others? Please let me know. The vocal structure is kind of weird, but it ultimately works for the song in the end. Such an awesome song.

This was probably the best Mandatory Metallica so far.

Stone Cold Crazy is fun but it's way too short. Not one of my favorite cover songs that they've done, but entertaining none the less. They won a Grammy for this, right?

Bleeding Me. When I heard this was the next song, I dreaded it because it was from Load. And the beginnings of the song led me to believe that I was correct in not looking forward to it, but it turned out to be not half bad in the end.

Trapped Under Ice
King Nothing
...And Justice For All

If only Metallica kept their sound like in Trapped Under Ice, they'd be bigger than they are today. Well, maybe not overall, but certainly in the metal fans' eyes. Great speed, the vocals go well along with the song and the solo is nice. Very nice indeed.

King Nothing isn't as good as Trapped Under Ice, unfortunately. The biggest turn-off to this song for me is not the vocals or the music, but definitely the lyrics. How stupid can it get? If you're a rock or metal band and include the lyrics "I wish I may/I wish I might" in any part of your song, then...yeah.

...And Justice For All is such a long song. Good thing it's not terrible. I think this song would work much better being much faster, but for what it is, it's okay. James sounds pretty good most of the time. I think the vocalwork on this CD is where I most prefer Metallica. Overall, pretty good.

Aug. 4:

Wherever I May Roam
Helpless
Ride The Lightning

The first song I got into about halfway through. I feel like this is a pretty poor song. The guitars just sound kind of annoying to me. Maybe it's the key they're in sometimes? I dunno. The vocals during the chorus aren't really that good either. Ah well.

Helpless is even worse to me. I knew right away it was a cover. Call me old fashioned, but the time signature (I guess) is so weird on this song and I really didn't like it. It just seemed to go on and on too. A huge miss for me. The bass parts sometimes are really cool, however.

Ride the Lightning, while not my favorite from that album, is certainly good. I can kind of see why Metallica fans prefer James' voice from the first three albums. It fits this song perfectly. Face-melting solo, too!

Aug. 5

Of Wolf And Man
No Leaf Clover
Creeping Death

It took me a while to figure out the name of the first song, but I identified it about halfway through. I've been meaning to try this song because it reminds me of the song titles from Nattens Madrigal, hehe! Although, this song really isn't that great to me. Really boring.

No Leaf Clover was the S&M version. Blech. James sounds despicable here and lame. The music even has a terrible interlude with what sounds like a spoken part?! Ugh. This is not thrash or metal Metallica. Although:

Creeping Death:

:rocker:

'nuff said.

Fuel

Fuel was probably the first Metallica song that I knew by name that wasn't the song from the Mission: Impossible 2 soundtrack. And even though Avril Lavigne covered it, it's one of my favorite Metallica songs. It has great speed, aggression, and James doesn't sound too terrible in it. Although, as with Ain't My Bitch, the guitar solo is pretty "meh".

So apparently Killing Time is on Garage Inc. which means it's a cover. And it's originally by a band called Sweet Savage. I've never heard 'em before, but this version isn't that bad. It sounds a little NWOBHM-y. The multiple solos are really good but I don't really like James' voice during the chorus.

Disposable Heroes is from Master of Puppets and it doesn't sound too bad. It sounds a lot faster than most of their stuff. If only they kept going this fast throughout the entire career. Woo! Very good solo in this song. I've never heard this song on MoP before, too bad I guess! It's very good. This song reminds me of Kreator or Sodom in some parts.

Note: Tomorrow is Judas Priest! YAY!

Hi! I thought I'd try something new.

For those of you who don't know me or haven't read this blog, I didn't start out listening to the "classic" metal bands. I only started listening to Iron Maiden last year and Judas Priest about 6 months ago.

But let's cut to the chase. After seeing setlist after setlist of Metallica, I decided to give them a try. I downloaded their discography (I know, naughty naughty) but I really had no idea where to start.

There's a hard rock radio station here, 98.9 The Rock, and every weeknight (I suppose) at 9 o'clock they have "Mandatory Metallica". They play a couple Metallica songs at random. I've decided to go ahead and listen to them as I got off work. These blogs will keep track of them so I can kind of tell what Metallica I like. And I'm doing this because I'm bored. ;)

July 30, 2008:

Ain't My Bitch
Die, Die My Darling
Eye Of The Beholder

Ain't My Bitch sounded alright, although I could pretty much tell it was on The Black Album or past. Of course, the DJ said "FROM THE LOAD ALBUM!" and I know how fans view those albums. But for this song, I didn't find it too terrible except for when James says "bitch". Seriously? BEEEYYAATTCHHHUUUHHH!!! And the solo. My God, the solo really made me see this song as a hard rock song (I really don't like hard rock) instead of thrash metal.

I'd listened to the Misfits cover before and I really liked it, so I thought it was cool they played it on the radio. Never heard the original, but still a good song for me. :)

I didn't catch the name of the last one but only heard it was on ...And Justice For All, so I got on iTunes and found out it was Eye Of The Beholder. I really like the beginning, but my favorite part are the vocals that go "Do you see what I see, etc." I just think it goes greatly along with the music and is easy to headbang to. :blaze:

More to come!

A combination of sleep deprivation, vacation anticipation, and caffeine dependency birthed a monstrous idea for a blog, but the same trifecta has prevented me from coming up with a non-clichéd introduction for the damn thing. As such, I’ll just slap you with the cliché: On August 19, 2006, my life changed forever.
No, I didn’t come out of the closet or get diagnosed with cancer. I didn’t even really do anything, per se. I spent four hours sweating my balls off in the basement of a struggling photography studio in downtown Troy. And I’ve never had a more fulfilling evening in my entire life.
Let me outline the situation for you. Until a month before 8/19 (this is my importance level-equivalent of 9/11, but without the negative connotations), I had never really listened to indie/experimental/post-rock, but I went to a Mouth of the Architect and Kenoma show in Tipp City on a whim to see my friend Doug who plays bass for Kenoma. My life changed as I nodded along to the droning chords and watched the thunderstorm ebb and flow with the music, equally dripping with electricity and emotion. Rarely does one’s life change twice in a summer, but I had no idea what was going to happen come 8/19.
I walked into the basement of Stillwater Photography that August day, ready for another Kenoma show, and excited at the very prospect. All I knew about the two opening bands, Romance of Young Tigers and Sparrows Swarm and Sing, was that they existed, and my mind was fairly closed, as they stood between me and another Kenoma performance. Romance of Young Tigers blew through a half hour set of ambient post-rock with effects aimed at disembowelment. They were pretty awesome, but I was still growing impatient.
After a brief intermission and the mysterious appearance of PVC pipes, two drum kits, and a xylophone, among other odds and ends, six bearded, unkempt, barefoot men took to the stage. After a brief introduction, “We are Sparrows Swarm and Sing”, the apparent frontman began to caterwaul: “O’ Shenandoah, I long to hear you…” Soon the five other men joined in and a mountain man hymn had begun. Without cease, the band transitioned into a forty-five minute set filled with a completely organic production of sound: violin bows dragged across triangles, cellists played pizzicato whilst faux-drunkenly wailing, and PVC pipes being crashed against ceiling beams in the dingy basement. By the end of the set, the band was physically and emotionally drained, and their spiritual anguish was reflected in the faces and hearts of their fifty-person audience. In forty-five short minutes on 8/19/06, Sparrows Swarm and Sing changed my life.
Kenoma still played that night and made a noble effort, but Doug himself admitted that following Sparrows Swarm and Sing was an impossible job. Photographs and goodbyes were exchanged, but the ride home and weeks to come were occupied by the lingering memories of how fucking good Sparrows Swarm and Sing were. Only fifty people or so were in that basement that night, but all of them will forever be able to say that they were. A guitarist from Dayton post-rockers Lungs later told me that he went to the Columbus performance the following night. As such, I think he has had twice as fulfilling a life as I have had. Sparrows were that good.
And yet even the most magical of experiences must come to pass. As of the writing of this blog, Sparrows Swarm and Sing have gone the way of so many great bands and called it quits. The fifty-odd Dayton area residents who saw SSAS that night will be the only ones who can ever say that they did.
But the gods of destruction didn’t stop there; they couldn’t. Although this seems chronologically awkward, prior to the misfortunate breakup of Sparrows Swarm and Sing, the fire marshal of the City of Troy declared the Stillwater Photography basement unfit to hold more than ten people at a time. Not long before that, Troy’s only record store (and employer of the illustrious Doug, the one from Kenoma that has been cited no less than twice already) went out of business. In a few short months, the music scene of Troy went from serviceable, given the one venue and one record store and handful of bands, to completely nonexistent. I am not the only one who was devastated.
Did no one care about the local music scene? Was a town of 30,000 too small to have a reasonably arty section of the subculture? After a mere handful of great shows, our only venue was gone. After years of dedication and service to the music-buying community, our record store had died, too. It seemed nothing could be done to stop the war being waged on music.
As more months passed and the rot of the music scene began to spread to the closest cultural center, Dayton, a few brave men and women tried to bring attention to the illness the music scene was undergoing. Organically, given the grass roots basis of the organization, the Dayton Dirt Collective was born to provide a semi-nightly, all ages, no smoking, and no drinking concert venue to Dayton music fans. The result has been a rebirth of the Dayton area music scene, and while Troy’s scene hasn’t been able to recover, a crow’s flight down Interstate 75 to a hovel eerily similar to the Stillwater Photography basement provides a new home for those of us who relate better to music than to people, better to a live performance than a party, and better to the escapist dream world provided by music than the cruelness of reality.
While much of the credit must be given to the tireless workers of the Dayton Dirt Collective, a large amount of national attention has been turned to the Dayton scene thanks to some of its bands. Post-metal beard-sporting sludge dudes Mouth of the Architect are on the brink of releasing a fourth album on Translation Loss Records, and if it follows in the tradition of the previous three, it will be amazing. They’ve always been true to their hometown and played local shows before departing on the national tours they seem to be invited on all the time these days. They’re incredible dudes who make incredible music and everyone should check them out. Kenoma have worked more tirelessly under the command of Doug McGinnis than any band I have ever seen. Their instrumental post-metal manages to say more than most bands with lyrics, especially on Dayton-specific opus “1913”, about the Great Flood that occurred here during that year. I only have room to mention a couple of bands in detail, but great bands like Gathiens from Sidney, Romance of Young Tigers from Dayton, The Sics from Dayton, Lungs from Englewood, Toads and Mice from Dayton, and the now-defunct Of Brothers and the Bear from Troy have given a silver lining to the ever-clouding nightmare of keeping a local scene alive.
Those of you who don’t live in Troy, Dayton, or, hell, Ohio, are probably wondering why you’re still reading this. Let me first thank you for bearing with me for this long (it’s now 2:12 AM), and explain that this microcosmic example actually affects all of us who give a shit about music and concerts. We’ve all experienced magical moments at concerts. Sparrows Swarm and Sing were one beautiful example in a long line of magical concert moments for me. The thrill of seeing Queensrÿche perform my favorite album of all time in its entirety twice, the witty banter of Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt, the shivers sent up my spine during Iron Maiden’s “Hallowed Be Thy Name”, the lightning crashing in a window behind Kenoma as they played “1913” in Tipp City, the gentle caress of my then-girlfriend during the now-devastating “Call It Off” at a Tegan and Sara show, the relentless brutality and good-natured attitude of Mastodon. All of these moments are pieces of a much larger puzzle in my life, a puzzle made up of concert experiences that have shaped me not only as a fan of music, but as a person. We’ve all been there, and I encourage you to think about those experiences in your own life as a concertgoer that have helped make being on this planet worth your while.
Whether fifty people or fifty thousand people attend a concert, the feeling is the same: pure euphoria and a sense of community with those there for the same reasons as you. It may seem a little pretentious to apply this to any old concert, after all, who sees Slayer to fucking bond? It doesn’t matter, whether consciously or subconsciously, you form a brotherhood with your fellow concertgoers and every piece of petty bullshit that is wrong with your life disappears for a few hours, and if you’re lucky, a few weeks.
I may be getting a little long in the tooth, but I want to bring this all home. I’ve driven seven hours to see my favorite band, Iron Maiden. I’ve also driven four hours to see them. I’ve seen Opeth three times, Clutch twice, Rush once, and countless other bands that occupy enormous sections of my music collection. All of that notwithstanding, seeing Sparrows Swarm and Sing on 8/19 in the basement of Stillwater Photography in Troy, Ohio was the best forty-five minutes of my life.
Whoever and wherever you are, don’t ignore your local scene. Support the bands that are out there working their asses off for you. Donate to the Dayton Dirt Collective. Go to shows. Buy records. Do something that shows that you care. It’s all I’m asking of you.
Again, I’d like to apologize for the probably numerous grammatical and spelling errors in this blog. It is currently 2:21 AM and I can barely think straight. Thank you for reading and don’t hesitate to share this with others and/or comment on it. It wasn’t just for me, it was for all of you.

Love,
I have friend and her brother is pretty cool. I got him interested in Boris and he's a huge Boris fan. Now, some of you may not agree, but I think Boris is metal. But this kid, he says "oh, I'm just gonna wait outside until Boris comes on" so he misses Torche and Lair of the Minotaur. Come the fuck on! I can't wait for the pit that will happen during LotM and see some hipsters get their shit ruined because they don't want to spill their coffee.

Secondly: fuck The Sword. They are not real metal. They have plagiarized shit and are a knock-off of every single good stoner metal band. They are jokes and they've just taken the joke too far. It's just a band for latte-drinking hipsters wrapped in scarves and wearing girl jeans to think that they're cool. "huhuhu, i like the sword, i'm gonna go see them and throw up them DEVIL HORNS huhuhu irony is hilarious" THE WHOLE FUCKING CULTURE OF SCENE/HIPSTER KIDS IS BASED ON IRONY HOLY SHIT *EXPLODES*

I recently had a negative back and forth with one of my favorite writers Iann Robinson. Iann's a great writer and a great guy, but honestly he has head way up ass sometimes. He's one of those people who's like "I don't care what you think, and if you think I do, you're wasting your time." I've never understood that, and I never will. These people think that if everybody didn't care what everybody else thinks that the world would be a better place. I say that if nobody care would anybody else did that what's the fucking point of being a writer in the first place? Why write on the internet on a place where everyone can see you? The writing for therapy theory is bullshit. Not if its on the internet. That's what diaries and journals are for. The internet is not for you to fess all your deepest and darkest secrets. If you think grabbing a piece of paper and a pencil is too ninties for you, than you should fucking die. The alternative of course is not caring what other people think, but think that people should listen to you. A bit hypocritical don't you think?

Anyways, the reason why I couldn't "change the channel" is because...you know, I always thought that was a shitty excuse. You ever see those cartoon or TV shows when a guy is watching TV flipping through the channels and all he sees is the same asshole waxing philospohical about his pretentious shit? He is changing the channel and he's coming across the same thing! What's he gonna do, turn off the TV? Fuck that! It's his TV, I think he ought to have the right to control what he watches? Fuck live and let live, I say if someone bothers you, kill him, kill his family, and then poop on their corpses. Therefore what I think is more important than him. Think of me as the new Maddox. After all somebody's gotta take over after he ran out of gas with the book.
