hey i really wanna get into Rush, but I don't have a clue where to start. I love the songs The Trees, and Tom Sawyer.

What could you recommend (individual songs please [tight budget])

Thanks!

Songs? Shit, man. Well, here's a smattering across their major eras:

Xanadu (1977)
The Spirit of Radio (1979)
Limelight (1981)
Distant Early Warning (1984)
The Pass (1989)
Test for Echo (1996)
One Little Victory (2002)
Far Cry (2007)

That's a start I suppose.

Well, normally either Moving Pictures or 2112 would be the best recommendations (albums) to give for someone to get into Rush.

But since you want songs: YYZ, Limelight, Freewill, The Spirit of Radio, and Closer to the Heart are great songs to start with, I guess. There's of course the epic 2112, too of course. :D

edit:
One Little Victory (2002)
Far Cry (2007)

Definitely these two for modern Rush. :D

All great picks. I'd say throw in Anthem and Bravado as well.

Yeah, but I mean, throw darts at the Rush discography and you're gonna hit gold nine times out of ten, so I was trying to be brief. Those two are also excellent and do show a side of the band the ones I listed don't quite show.

Rush are pretty solidly an album-based band, but for individual songs just check out the hits and you'll figure out if they're your vibe or not.

I always thought that compilation sucked.

Here's the thing, you say you want to buy individual songs, so I assume the place you want to buy them is iTunes. For a lot of the longer songs like Xanadu, you have to buy the whole album.

Anyways, if you already love Tom Sawyer and the trees my pics would be the popular songs: :fingers:

Limelight
YYZ
Freewill
Working Man
One Little Victory

Then buy the 2112 album.

Well, considering Rush and Lamb of God aren't exactly the same type of music, it's kind of hard to compare the two. But, since Rush has been around for 30+ years putting out an album a year for many of those years, I'd give the nod to Rush. I'm a LoG fan but put me on a desert island and I'd take Rush's dischography over LoG's in a flash.

And as for your Rush songs, I'd just get Chronicles, Disk 1 if you have to pick between the two, but can't go wrong with that collection. It stops at 1990 though, so you don't get any of the more recent tracks. Different Stages Live CD is pretty sweet too which includes a nice mix of old and new tracks.

If you like instrumentals, get La Villa Strangiato as it is simply amazing!

Other songs to recommend:

Freewill
Natural Science
Red Barcheta
Subdivisions
Manhattan Project
Dreamline

Hell you really can't go wrong as most of their songs are pretty damn good at least!
