The deciding game will be Blanton vs Bumgarner

300%_Density
10-15-2010, 12:35 PM
Here's the NLCS pitching matchups...there might be 7 runs scored in the first 3 games

Game 1: Roy Halladay vs. Tim Lincecum
Game 2: Roy Oswalt vs. Jonathan Sanchez
Game 3: Cole Hamels vs. Matt Cain
Game 4: Joe Blanton vs. Madison Bumgarner

I'm thinking NFL overtime rules first to score will probably win b/c there will not be much more offense anyway.

I think the hit total does not give justice to how great both pitchers did. Hitting was great against both pitchers, but I do have an issue with the way that the home plate umpire called some pitches (for both teams.)

Still way too early to call it but I like our chances with Mad Bum against Blanton at home, and after that we only need 1 win against Halladay, Oswalt or Hamels.

Yankees games are sooo slow... I take a shower after getting back from the gym, check the TV again and there is one more out, no runs scored.

Win for sports fans...or win for entire state...

The latter will create the biggest uproar, but as a sports fan, this is fucking awesome, and just what the Bay needs.

I was on a plane coming home today, when the pilot said in classic pilot tone "for all you sports fans, the Giants have won the world series" and the plane erupted into high fives. It was cool. Very happy. Never would have thought this would happen so quickly. I knew they were on the up, but wow.

Speed makes a huge difference defensively as an outfielder even though it doesn't show up in stats. And Werth only has only played 2 full seasons, not to mention his power numbers are inflated due to his ballpark.

HA

Galaraga will be around for 2 more years, a lot of people don't know how baseball contracts work. Basically drafted players are under team control for 6 years:

First 3 full seasons get paid league minimum, may receive small bonuses based on awards, all star and postseason appearances.

Next 3 seasons arbitration eligible, if the player and team can't agree on a contract, they both submit a number and go through an arbitration case and the more fair number is selected. Players usually get 40, 60 and 80 percent of the money they would command on the open market in their respective arb. years.
Tons of players are signing today because it's the deadline to submit arb numbers. Joey Votto just signed an extension for all 3 arb years and will become a free agent after 2013 if he doesn't sign another extension in the meantime.

Free agency is where you hear about all the ridiculous contracts because players become available to all 30 teams, most of the time the highest bidder. Teams can offer as much money per season over however many years they want. Jayson Werth, Cliff Lee and Carl Crawford were this years 9-figure winners. And the Giants fucked themselves over by signing Barry Zito to a 7 year $126 million contract a few years back, then following it up with 5 years and $60 mil to Aaron Rowand. Zito didn't play in the postseason at all this year and Rowand was a bench warmer.

If we didn't have enough bandwaggoners already, I'd say the Giants.

Jayson Werth is saying the Phillies could have afforded him and Cliff Lee if they hadn't traded him last offseason. I don't think he realized his numbers are significantly inflated and he's the next Aaron Rowand. I don't think he'll be terrible in DC, but he's definitely not worth $120 mil and he's gonna be hearing about it for the next decade.

It would be nice for Pujols to remain a Cardinal but as long as the Sox or Yankees don't end up with him, I'm happy. Sucks that Wainwright is out but they should still contend this year, and no matter what happens over the next few years at least they ended up with a championship.

I couldn't be happier with the Giants winning this year, but I think they can win one more over the next 3 years. I would put money on saying they at least end up with one more pennant.

Actually, they were pretty representative of how a relatively poor (in comparison to the Phillies and Yankees of the MLB) baseball team can win the World Series. It's simple.

They have DYNAMITE pitching.
Their hitting got hot at the right time.

When the Giants hit like that, they aren't going to lose, but they don't hit like that very often.

Let's kick the door down, this time.

Door shall not be kicked. Going for #11 in '11. You heard it here first!!! But seriously congrats. I'm just hoping St. Louis gets there for some wonderful banter, and if not I will be on Rangers bandwagon to pound Brewers face in!!!

People have been talking about this, but baseball is a totally regional thing. Unless you're a fan of/live in Texas or STL, or you're way into baseball, you probably don't care about the great series that's going on. Notice 2 people other than me posting in this thread in the last week and a half

Well, it's Jeter's last year now. First Mo, now him. What a good run, I feel incredibly fortunate I got to see this guy's entire career, but holy moly time flies so fast, now I feel really old.

Still waiting for Bernie Williams to retire btw.

The last season where we get to see Jeter potentially get 200 hits. 193 of them singles.

Maideneer
02-12-2014, 11:32 AM
Cute, here's a fun stat.

As a percentage of total career hits, Jeter has more non-singles (2B+3B+HR) than Pete Rose does. And PR is the most prolific hitter there ever was. Even Ty Cobb finished only a couple percentage points ahead of DJ in this category.

Most great hitters finish with around 75% of their hits being singles. Nice try.

AnthG
02-12-2014, 11:40 AM
We weren't talking about Pete Rose and Ty Cobb (the latter of who was a notorious non-power hitter). We were talking about Jeter, so I made a comment about him.

He isn't a notorious gambler or a racist asshole at least, so he's got that going for him.

Maideneer
02-12-2014, 11:45 AM
Well in baseball see, we measure performance against others for comparison. So that's what I was doing. Jeter hits singles, ok fine. What's your main point then? Are you implying he's a shit player or do you wish a great player like him was with the crappy team from your city all these years?

AnthG
02-12-2014, 11:51 AM
If I was a fan of a crappy team then sure...but i'm a Red Sox fan :D

And a bad player? No. Just overrated, especially defensively, even in his prime (which I realize has nothing to do with my comment, but whatever).

Maideneer
02-12-2014, 11:55 AM
Overrated by who? I never understand this term overrated. If you're referring to the media understand that's sports writers are total idiots, outdoing everyone in stupidity except maybe for weathermen.

AnthG
02-12-2014, 12:00 PM
If we're discounting media and sports writers, then no one in sports is overrated or underrated. I also try not to count fan opinions as much since there's too much bias. Yanks fans are obviously gonna love him, Red Sox and Mets fans are obviously going to hate him (with a few exceptions here and there), other AL East fans i'm sure will most likely dislike him.

Maideneer

The concept of overrated and underrated is a very strange one, it certainly holds zero meaning with me. It's such a vague statement that can be torn a thousand different ways. Is A-Rod overrated? Underrated? Completely even? Who determines this and why is what they say the final word? Dumb term.

AnthG
02-12-2014, 12:21 PM
verb (used with object), o·ver·rat·ed, o·ver·rat·ing.
to rate or appraise too highly; overestimate

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/overrated

The term itself, to me, isn't vague. It's pretty clear cut. Unfortunately it depends on the person using it as they will obviously value certain criteria over others. In terms of Jeter's base stats: Career batting average, total hits, I can understand why someone would say he isn't overrated. But given the lack of his power numbers, his defense which isn't that great and was most of the time just barely better than average, the fact that he never won an MVP, the fact that his overall numbers may have been a product of being on a stacked team for so many years (something which isn't just unique to him, and can be said about a lot of my favourite Red Sox players, for sure), and his apparent perceived clutch hitting ability, there's where the overrated comes in.

As I said earlier, unfortunately it can be influenced by where you stand as a fan. Since i'm a Red Sox fan it may be easy to throw my opinion away and chalk it up to bias, but I have no doubt in my mind that if I was even just neutral towards the Yankees, I'd still feel he was an overrated player.

As far as Arod, unfortunately his steroid use (both the stuff he admitted to when he was with Texas and what has been alleged with the Biogenesis stuff) has clouded it, but if we take his numbers just at face value, then my opinion is no he isn't overrated. He would be properly rated. Don't let that throw you off when it comes to my opinion of him though. I still hate him and he's a scumbag, and I like Jeter FAARRR more than I like Arod. But in terms of sheer baseball numbers, steroids aside, Arod > Jeter.

So how about Ian Kinsler basically stating he hates the Rangers now and hopes they win 0 games? That's...interesting.

I dislike the Tigers only because my cousin and uncle are both huge Tigers fans. Although they were conveniently quiet after last year's ALCS to my Red Sox.

And did Hamilton make any inflamatorry comments about the Rangers themselves the way Kinsler did? The only thing I remember was when he said that the State of Texas isn't a baseball town.

Ya that was pretty much it and like that he didnt want to play for that team. Then Hamilton went and had an awful season. Hate the dude but sadly he plays for my favorite team so he needs to play well :(

When 2012 started I was scared of the Angels. But now I see them for what they are. Severely flawed, with the best young star of the game with the 2 largest albatross contracts that'll haunt them for several years. That division is loaded, Rangers & A's are great, the Mariners will be a lot better, the Astros are bad but young and they are slowly developing players. They keep this up Houston will have a team in 3 or 4 years. No way Angels are better than 3rd or 4th place.

What this guy i saying. Angels pitching is baaad. Pujols and Hamilton rebounding I laugh at that though quite sad.

Mariners wont go anywhere with no offense. Cano wont even be close to the numbers he put up with the Yankees especially in the Mariners stadium.

Sometimes if your offense is that good you dont' need more than 2 or 3 good pitchers. Which they have in Wilson and Weaver.

But, if the trend continues with their lineup the way it has, yeah they'll probably finish 3rd. I still have Seattle finishing 4th. I see the AL West being Texas, Oakland, LA, Seattle, Houston.

I guess their starting pitchers could rebound some, but probably not enough quality arms for them. I don't see the Mariners doing shit either. And Houston?

Maybe having the Seahawks winning the Super Bowl will light a fire under their asses and get them to step it up!
