I'm starting to think that Dream Theater's album covers are created in the same way that Family Guy's jokes are made on South Park.

I really want this to be good, but I don't have very high hopes. DT's output since Scenes From a Memory has been very mixed, and Systematic Chaos was the worst thing they've ever done. Hopefully the longer songs here will be more reminiscent of the greatness of tracks like A Change of Seasons, Learning to Live, Finally Free, and Metropolis 1, instead of the labyrinthine arrangements of crappy music like they've been doing lately.

The last album was the worst album they've ever done, I think my worry is warranted.

personally i thought octivarium was worse. i give systematic chaos more props cause i thought in the presence of enemies was aweomse. but i do hope this album is more along the lines of Train of Thought and Images and Words (my 2 fav DT cds)

Pretty much amen. Octavarium is definitely their worst disc. I've listened to Systematic Chaos all of twice, and I don't hate it, but it definitely hasn't had me coming back like Train of Thought or Awake, which are probably my two favourite discs.

I disagree with the last 2 posts:D I rather liked Octavarium except for one song and thought aside from ITPOE on System of Chaos that it was really bad!

Octavarium is DT's best post-Scenes album. It's just about the only one where they seemed to concentrate on songwriting more than wanking and pointless nu-metal heaviness.

Agreed. At least this cover is dreamy-looking, like Awake's. That might mean the sounds inside are similar. The Systematic Chaos cover looked like the contents: shitty.

What was the one song on Octavarium you didn't like?

This band is horrible and this album will be horrible by their standards. Seriously.

Touche! But giving this album a 'fair chance' would be about as sensible as buying the new Shadows Fall album this year. :D

edit: Or Dragonforce or (any other band that was never very good to begin with but has reached disturbingly new lows with their recent albums)

edit2: so many of my friends suck this bands dick though, I'm sure I'll still end up hearing this album a few times, gah :hecho:

I don't mind long songs as long as they're good in the vein of A Change of Seasons or Scarred or In The Presence Of Enemies!

There's apparently going to be a limited edition 3-disc version of this.

Disc 1: The main album (no bonus tracks)
Disc 2: Six covers (don't know which ones)
Disc 3: Instrumental version of the album

I've heard two minutes of one of the new songs. :eyes: (this always ends up happening to me) All I can say is: when did Dream Theater become a terrible Opeth cover band? :eyes: :hecho: :eyes::eyes::eyes::eyes::eyes:

On the two new songs:

A Nightmare to Remember is a HUGE mixed bag. The first four minutes of the song is pretty standard newer Dream Theater. More of them trying to be overly aggressive, kind of like an overly progressive Metallica. However, the middle section of the song from about 5-8 minutes is really fucking fantastic. Definitely better than anything on the last record, and among the higher points of all DT post - Scenes From a Memory. However after that it plunges into a wildly wanky and pointless instrumental section, followed by one of the stupidest things in the world, a Portnoy vocal-driven rap/growl thing which is just totally awful. The rest of the song just kind of wanders aimlessly.

A Rite of Passage is solid. It actually does something unthinkable by modern DT standards: It actually follows a generally traditional song format, and is only about 8 minutes long, and fairly short on the wankery. The verses are kinda meh, but the chorus is just fantastic - very melodic and memorable.

I'm really not sure what to expect with the rest of the songs. This album could wind up being fairly good overall, but these songs have led to me just maintaining my level of skepticism.

Yeah it seems like Opeth has rubbed off on them quite a bit. It will really suck if Opeth starts sounding like Dream Theater :headoff:
After hearing the longer track, I can't help but notice the different approaches to 12+ minute prog tracks. To write a song about a car crash, DT effectively writes lyrics like, "Car crash. Hospital. What now?"
For a song about getting a brain hemorrhage and 6 months of vertigo, Mastodon writes about black holes and being escorted out of hell by a magic man.
