4. Clutch- Strange Cousins from the WestAn awfully damn good album. Will probably be in my top ten as well.

5. Mastodon- Crack the SkyeDitto.

6. The Mars Volta- OctahedronIt's growing on me. It'll be interesting to see if it makes my top ten - there is a lot of excellent stuff out this year already...

8. Mono- Hymn to the Immortal WindFucking nice. What an album. Mono inexplicably OWNS the little corner of the post-rock world they have carved out for themselves - nobody does it better.

10. Isis- Wavering RadiantThis is almost certainly going to be top five for me. It might be the best Isis album yet (my other fave is the epic Oceanic). :rocker:

Nice list.

I bought new Divine Heresy and Death Angel - Live in Germany on Friday. I can't get Death Angel out of my player because it's so bad ass and I officially HAVE to go see a metal show in Germany. They are some crazy Mo'Fo's.

Listened to half of DH on Friday and it's soem brutal shit. The opening track was pretty epic and Dino is a great songwriter and always has been.

Both cd's were $9.99 and maybe the best $20 I've spent in a while.

Basically my top ten is static but Dream Theater has been climbing. I had it in 9th, it's more like 6th now.

:agree: Tell me about it. Same goes for the new Pelican LP and the upcoming Red Sparowes album. 2009 has been so awesome that it makes me wonder what the hell 2010 could possibly do to top it. It's almost like all the good bands will be taking the next year or so off and we won't have anything good to listen to anymore! NNNNOOOOO!!!!!

...or maybe it means that all these killer bands will be touring for the majority of 2010. At least that would be cool. :D

Mine's been shaken up a good deal and nothing I have to hear is out yet. The discs I expect to make a run at the top 10 that comes out the rest of the year are the new ones from Baroness, Porcupine Tree, and Between the Buried and Me, but I'm gonna hear 50 records regardless and I've only heard 33 thus far so hopefully some pleasant surprises are out there.

1. Slough Feg- Ape Uprising! (I may be exaggerating a bit but basically this is why metal is awesome.)
2. Propagandhi- Supporting Caste (Coming out so early in the year was to this album's disadvantage since I'm utterly used to the songs now, but it's still among the best punk I've heard from this decade.)
3. Mastodon- Crack the Skye (Yeah, grew on me some, really great disc and probably their most challenging)
4. My Dying Bride- For Lies I Sire (Welcome back, full-time violinist! Probably the best MDB album, period.)
5. Clutch- Strange Cousins from the West (Such good rock songs...that's all you can say.)
6. Cobalt- Gin (Holy shit, this might climb yet since I've only had it for three days, I'm in love with it though.)
7. Dream Theater- Black Clouds & Silver Linings (They're not supposed to be able to make music this good in this decade, wtf. Awesome for what it is and there's not much melodic prog metal I'm still into.)
8. St. Vincent- Actor (Token indie record of the year for me, I guess. She's one hell of a songwriter.)
9. Giant Squid- The Ichthyologist (Again, still relatively new, needs to sink in, but I'm really digging it so far. Nothing as instantly memorable as the Metridium Field material, unfortunately.)
10. Mono- Hymn to the Immortal Wind (Hasn't aged so great but this is the best instrumental post-rock album of the year for now. Your move, Russian Circles.)

Between the Buried and Me- The Great Misdirect

Probable-
Skeletonwitch- Breathing the Fire
Municipal Waste- Massive Aggressive

I'm not joking when I say that I will listen to it. I don't expect to think much of it, but their 3 previous albums were a big part of my musical youth, and I do enjoy Alter Bridge quite a bit. Haha, fo serious. It's true that you guys have interested me a lot in that Cobalt album, however as a result of this I tried out a couple of songs to see if it was really awesome. I thought it was okay... but not really something that great, or that I'd really be able to get into. Which then made me sad, because I followed the lyrics along to the song, and I fucking loved the lyrics (Hemmingway get me really fucked up!!)

If anyone is into this kind of thing, Matisyahu's new album Light is way better than his pretty damn good last album so check it out. It's a more vocal album, which I think works to his advantage. You put on Matisyahu for his singing and his rapping, not the kind of metal-dub that plagued a lot of the instrumental sections of his older stuff. Also there's less beatboxing and it's mostly used to accent his sung vocals, so I think this is the best-case scenario for him. In the top 10 for now for sure.

Decided to go ahead and make my tentative top ten. The only albums (I think) that may shake things up are the new Skeletonwitch and the new Hypocrisy. I need to give Sonata's Arctica's new one a few more listens, because like Unia it's got a shitload going on and it's going to take a while to digest. So far I've heard like fifty-one 2009 releases, so this was pretty tough.

01. Mastodon - Crack The Skye
02. Kreator - Hordes Of Chaos
03. Ensiferum - From Afar
04. Bloodbound - Tabula Rasa
05. Cage - Science Of Annihilation
06. Warbringer - Waking Into Nightmares
07. Clutch - Strange Cousins From The West
08. Delain - April Rain
09. SuidAkrA - Crogacht
10. Alestorm - Black Sails At Midnight

I might have to check out some of his proper stuff soon. He did a joint on the new Crystal Method album which is one of the better tracks on the disc. From what I've heard, this sounds like something I would like (or at least appreciate). :fist:

This is approximate and only relevant until I hear a bunch of stuff that should rule but I felt like it so sue me.

1. Cobalt- Gin
2. Propagandhi- Supporting Caste
3. Mastodon- Crack the Skye
4. Slough Feg- Ape Uprising!
5. My Dying Bride- For Lies I Sire
6. Dream Theater- Black Clouds & Silver Linings
7. Clutch- Strange Cousins from the West
8. Wolves in the Throne Room- Black Cascade
9. St. Vincent- Actor
10. Matisyahu- Light

Even though I really like everything on this list, the following artists with forthcoming discs' last album made my top 10 in the year of their last one: 3 Inches of Blood, Porcupine Tree, Redemption, Baroness, and Between the Buried and Me.

The following bands would have if I was familiar with them at the time of their last album: The Gates of Slumber, Immortal, Tegan and Sara.

The following artists were either really close to the top 10 last time they put one out or maybe just had a slight misstep but still are great: Skeletonwitch, Sonata Arctica, Russian Circles, The Red Chord.

Then there's Megadeth, who seem destined to outdo United Abominations.

So basically, everything's up in the air.

Gin at #1? Really?

Newcomers to my list of top-ten candidates are Circle of Ouroborus - Tree of Knowledge and A Place to Bury Strangers - Exploding Head. Other than that, haven't heard many new 2009s since the last time I checked in.

So, heres my preliminary rankings. Subject to definite change. Explanations below.

1. Propagandhi - Supporting Caste
2. Dead Prez - Pulse of the People
3. Mastodon - Crack the Skye

Those three are my almost-for-certain top 10 choices, as of right now. 1 and 3 will not leave the top tier, but Dead Prez might be bumped if Nas & Damien Marley's collaboration is good and released this year, and The Game's Red Album is also up for consideration.

For the next ones, these are my top 10 contenders. I haven't listened to these enough to comfortably award them a spot yet. They are all GREAT albums, but I can't pick my favorites yet. Time will tell with these ones. But they will most likely rank high.

4. Darkest Hour - The Eternal Return
5. Shadows Fall - Retribution
6. Insomnium - Across the Dark
7. My Dying Bridge - For Lies, I Sire
8. Rebellion - Arise - History of the Vikings Part III
9. The 69 Eyes - Back in Blood
10. Absu - Absu

The next batch is the hyped ones that, upon first listen (some I haven't listened to all the way yet) are good, but I need more time to let them sink in. These could very well be in my Top 10 later this year.

Cobalt - Gin (first time right now)
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
Napalm Death - Time Waits for No Slave
Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs
Slough Feg - Ape Uprising!

These are ones that I either haven't listened to all the way or have only heard once, and are solid releases no doubt, but probably won't break my top 10. Included is: Mono, Mos Def, Municipal Waste, Isis, Amorphis, The Autumn Offering, Giant Squid, Adagio, Wolves in The Throne Room, and 3IOB.

Now, up to this point, I have liked all these albums and enjoyed listening to them, to varying degrees. The next batch is the bottom feeders that I doubt I will ever revisit. I only really HATED The Lonely Island, but the others were just too meh to write home about.

Keri Hilson - In a Perfect World (loved Knock You Down)
The Lonely Island - We are So Bad (or something like that)
Eyes Set to Kill - The World Outside
Prince - Lotusflow3r

This could all go out the window when I get my hands on the new Swallow the Sun, Paradise Lost, BTBAM, Skeletonwitch, and Baroness. Megadeth might break top 20. We'll see.

On the one listen I've had so far, I was headbanging to the first few songs, really getting into it. But then the metal fatigue set in, and by Girras Temple I was just like "alright. Now its time for something completely different." Very good stuff, I just fall in and out of musical moods too easily. But if it makes you feel better, I only checked it out because I saw how much you liked it.

I haven't heard half the albums that seem to be appearing here, but I'm d/ling Anaal Nathrakh, Absu, Giant Squid (I havent heard them but the name intrigues me), Slough Feg (I technically have heard it but I dont have it, and on a somewhat related not the guitarist Angelo lives where I live and hangs out in a record store I frequent all the time), Wolves in the Throne Room and Megadeth right now, so I'll be able to filter those in soon.

In no order:

Cattle Decapitation- The Harvest Floor
This is the best album I have heard this year. It's amazing. Often I end up over playing albums by bands I love when they come out (I ruined Twilight of the Thundergod that way) but this still remains awesome after half a year. Cattle's finest death metal work. Favorite songs:Into the Public Bath, Body Farm, Regret and the Grave.

Cannibal Corpse- Evisceration Plague
Not the greatest CC album, but one of the better records to come out this year. At first I didn't love it, but it grew on me and despite terrible production I think it's superior to their last 4 releases. To Decompose and the title track are my favorite off this one.

Mumakil- Behold the Failure
This is a great grind band that no one seems to care about. Well, the album is great. So go get it. Top quality grindcore, and one of my favorites this year.

Insect Warfare-S/T
IW pretty much abandoned their old style, but their last album (if you can call it that) was still solid. I've heard it called a cheap way to make money off their retirement, but I really dont think it's that.Noisecore isn't for everyone, but they do a good job with it, and they seem to be sincere. Sad to see them end their career though :(

Warbringer-Walking into Nightmares
I loved War Without End, but this was just bad. I've been told to listen to it again, because no one can seem to believe that I hate this, but I do. It sucks. There is nothing special about it and the songs sound formulaic and boring. Living in a Whirlwind is one of the worst songs I have heard in awhile. Warbringer have failed me.

GWAR- Lust in Space
I figured I would hate this album before it came out, and I did when I first got it, but it's certainly grown on me. I still find some of the songs (Let Us Slay, Metal Metal Land, Make a Child Cry) unlistenably bad, but others (Lust in Space, Parting Shot, Where is Zog?) are better than their last cd and I think Damnation Under God is the best GWAR song in the last 8 years. So it's definitley got some good metal in it.

Jungle Rot- What Horrors Await
It's the same thing Jungle Rot has done on every album before it, but it's still better than 99% of death metal these days. This really ranks highly for me on the 2009 album list. Nerve Gas Catastrophe is one of my favorite JR songs.

Municipal Waste- Massive Aggressive
Massive Aggressive is a great album. I've heard people complain that it sounds more like Suicidal Tendencies than the Waste, but it works just fine for me. Admittedly Tony has changed his vocal style, but I don't think it's a change for the worst. Not as good as Hazardous Mutation, but it rivals Art of Partying. One thing I find odd is that the mixing is terrible and I even think Waste Em All sounds better than it, which is weird because of them being on Earache, but it doesn't ruin the music by any means. Wolves of Chernobyl is the best song on it.

Suffocation- Blood Oath
Suffocation will never be as good as they were from Human Waste- Pierced From Within, but after accepting that this is a really kick ass album. Far better than their selftitled and Souls to Deny I think. The rerecorded BTS track makes it even better. Suffocation can still put out solid death metal.

General Surgery- Corpus in Extremis
General Surgery are one of the best Carcass worship bands out there. While I dont like it as much as Left Hand Pathology, it's some pretty great goregrindy music and it transfers excellently in concert

Behemoth- Evangelion
This really isn't the best Behemoth album, but I wouldn't call it bad. Nothing special though.Ov Fire is the best song, the rest really aren't to stand outish, but Behemoth are still good at what they do. Just hope for a better album next time.

I actually agree with a good deal of what you said here, too (the other place being your most recent post in the Slayer / Sabbat thread...;)). A few random comments:

Cattle - gotta listen to that one some more. I liked what I heard at first.
Corpse - what you said.
Mumakil - I know! Why doesn't anybody seem to care about this album? It's pretty damn good, IMHO.
Waste - haven't listened yet (I know, I know :nag:)
Suffocation - what you said.
Surgery - ditto. If you like them, you might also try out the Chicago band "Deaden" (they have really Carcass-y album covers :D). http://www.myspace.com/deaden
Behemoth - exactly. Unremarkable album, and "Ov Fire..." is the best track.

Haha damn your really on that Black Pyramid tip.

Heard the new Municipal Waste, it's definitely good. Not much change from their earlier sound, generally not as catchy riffs though and not as memorable hooks, but it is more aggressive as advertised. Wolves of Chernobyl, Masked By Delirium, Relentless Threat, and Horny For Blood are the instant classics.

Haha fair enough. And yeah, Redemption definitely have more in common with DT than Sonata. Sadly I heard the Sonata album just about 2 hours ago and I am very sad to say it kinda blows. If you weren't crazy about Unia, you're gonna hate this. Don't be fooled by that song "Flag in the Ground".
And Queensryche today is not music I would listen to. If they put it out ater Promised land, I'm probably not touching it. Even including Promised land in that is a stretch for me, I just love "Someone Else?".

I definitely disagree with this, I feel like it's miles ahead of their last two albums, and it grows on me a little more every time I listen to it. It's easily the best "extreme" metal release I've heard all year. Evangelion, and the new Amorphis and My Dying Bride albums probably would make up my top 3 of the year at the moment.

A long time ago, I thought Baroness was a "-core" band I think because that artist does album covers for other core bands. I know they're not now, but I've still yet to check them out.

Athkrakh....I like that.

The only albums Baizley's done covers for are for Pig Destroyer, Darkest Hour, Skeletonwitch, Baroness (obviously), Deadbird, Vitamin X, Shitstorm, Magrudergrind and Torche as far as I know.

Yeah, I mostly connect them to Darkest Hour.

And I guess he DID do them for Skeletonwitch! Well, alright! :D

Anal Athkrakh...

...but isn't the word "Anal" redundant in that context? Is there another type of asscrack that I don't know about?

Anyway, glad you give them (or John Baizley - whichever) props for doing some of the artwork for Skeletonwitch, but lest we not forget that he is also an incredible guitarist, and a raging vocalist to boot. :rocker:

Seriously, bro - you need to check out Baroness.

Funny - my first thought as well was "this is good - but it ain't no Red Album"...but my first thought about a lot of things if often wrong...:D

I've been spinning it on repeat for the last few hours, and it is pretty damn good. It's just different from the Red Album - not necessarily worse.

Give it some time - and try not to let expectations ruin it - I've done that before.

I think it is different, not necessarily worse, but it is. Everything seems to blend together, not in that fantastic album way, but in the power metal everything sounds the same way. The style has shifted to include an irish-punky tinge. The psalm and lament piece is pretty much the same thing played twice the second time around.
But those are just my complaints.

Just got through the Baroness for the first time. The 'Bullhead' pieces are one of my favorite things I've heard this year, the rest of the album doesn't quite have that same emotionally draining quality (perhaps mercifully), but it is very good. The vocals sound more confident, the songs less meandering than on Red Album. What this one lacks though is the hammer, the riffs that bring the party to a halt and make you go "What th.....:rocker:". They really nailed it with that 'Bullhead' theme though (it comes up again in "Ogeechee Hymnal"), it creates a strong vibe and kinda gives every song its own value in the grand scheme of the record, like a canvas against which the rest of the album is set against (what a way to put it :hecho: ). I disagree with Tony that all the songs sound the same in a bad way, the songs do kinda run together but I like the cohesiveness, makes it really feel like a "record". They still haven't maxed out their potential, which in a way I'm glad for because there's still room for improvement. These are of course initial impressions and like all 'deep' albums it commands more listens, a good thing.

TonyD

Just a tinge. I'm listening again so if I can hear a specific spot I'll point it out.
I think the Red Album had a lot of purposeful noodleing, I wouldn't call it meandering.

Well put, ADD - and good counterpoints as well, Tony. I think it's time somebody started an album review thread...;)

I feel like I want to listen to it just a little more before I do a review, but somebody will probably beat me to the punch. If not, look for it soon!

EDIT: Oh, and that "common theme" thing that ADD noted in the "Bullhead" tracks and "Ogeechee Hymnal" is called a "leitmotif" - a commonly used tool that brings a more cohesive feel to a body of work such as a movie or an album of songs. Baroness did it in a way on the Red Album too, with "Grad" (the same melodies are present in the beginning of the album's opening track "Rays on Pinion" as well).

After hearing forty albums, here's my top ten. I'm going to hit 52 total (but I'm only ranking 50 because I don't feel comfortable ranking a couple on account of friendship with band members. I'll break that rule if I really love the stuff and think it needs to be heard but it's just awkward for everyone otherwise):

2. Propagandhi- Supporting Caste
3. Mastodon- Crack the Skye
4. Slough Feg- Ape Uprising!
5. Struck By Lightning- Serpents
6. My Dying Bride- For Lies I Sire
7. Dream Theater- Black Clouds & Silver Linings
8. Clutch- Strange Cousins from the West
9. The Mars Volta- Octahedron
10. Wolves in the Throne Room- Black Cascade

My to-hear has some stuff that could definitely break into the top 10 once I hear it as well:

The Gates of Slumber- Hymns of Blood and Thunder
Redemption- Snowfall on Judgment Day
Immortal- All Shall Fall
Skeletonwitch- Breathing the Fire
Baroness- Blue Record
Russian Circles- Geneva
Between the Buried and Me- The Great Misdirect
Tegan and Sara- Sainthood

Yeah, exactly. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, which is my biggest beef with music now. I'd rather have a band I respect challenge my limits and fail than just put out a tepid album that makes you say "yep, that's death metal" or "yep, that's black metal" or whatever.

I have an unranked list of albums that I've heard this year that I actually thought were good. It's only got about 16 items though. Not the best year for most of my interests so far, honestly. However there are probably at least 7 more albums that I want to hear specifically that I haven't yet gotten around to. Hopefully the list will be a sizable bit bigger by the end of the year when I rank them.

Absolutely no way for me. Last year I got 3 absolutely incredible albums, and a handful of others that I really, really liked. I actually loved my entire top 10. This year, that's true of maybe my top 2.

Don't know yet what to make of this new Converge. Starts out real fierce then gets 'meh' until the last couple songs, which are different for them but maybe not of the highest quality. For sure isn't hitting me as hard as No Heroes or Jane Doe initially did, but it could be a grower. It sounds massive though. Totally massive. Wouldn't have anyone other than Ballou producing and engineering music of this style, he's got it dialed. Drumming is as usual off the charts too.

Maybe it's time to start thinking about a new top 10 formula or going back to the old one?
Last year's just bumped Metallica and Priest up a few extra spots they shouldn't have gotten just because they were somewhere on the bottom of almost everyone's list.
Also maybe a longer list or extra points for senior members, whether that includes myself or not. Ex:

1. ___ - ___ 15 points
2. ___ - ___ 14 points
...
15. __ - ___ 1 point

or

1. ___ - ___ 12 points
2. ___ - ___ 11 points
...
10. __ - ___ 3 points

People bitch no matter what it is, but I liked last year's well enough. Same points as always, and extra points for universally popular albums, which safeguarded against three people pushing an album to number one by themselves. We can discuss it but I think last year's worked well.

Wrath pretty much was an abomination. Period. You can still be a fan of a band and admit that they turn out some shit sometimes (Metallica). It's a sign of being a truly discerning metal fan - in my not so humble opinion - that you can be objective and honest about a band's output and not just suck the collective teat because you've gushed about all that band's stuff that came before. Shit is shit. Have the balls to say so (not directed at you, personally - I'm just saying in general).

Henceforth, the latest Chimaira is also total dog shit (again, IMNSHO). I love the guys - they are from my home town for Satan's sake, but their latest album sucks. Thank you, come again.

I have this ongoing thing with him where I'm trying to see what he thinks about the Blue Record (or Baroness in general), and he doesn't seem to be offering an opinion one way or another. He's kinda spineless like that. :eyes::D

It is one of the better melodeath albums to come out in years.

That position seems a bit low, I think it will usurp TBDM and maaaaayyybbeee Crack the Skye.

Everyone needs to check out Cormorant by the way, they really could be something special.

First run through tonight, and I like it. I think you hit the nail on the head...they could really be something special. I didn't even need to look it up to confirm that I heard Giant Squid's Aaron Gregory's vocals in "Hole in the Sea" - it was that obvious. I do know that the two bands are buds, but I didn't know about the collaboration. The album's end-of-year-list position just got bumped up a few notches just because of that fact alone...:D

No, but seriously...it's pretty damn good. I'm looking forward to repeated listens. :rocker:

I went to Hasting's and they had it on sale for 9.99 but I went with the flaming lips instead! D:

I got Kylesa. One sludge metal album a year is more than enough for me.

I'm having a hard time coming up with a list I'm happy with. 1-7 are pretty solid but 8-10 are a bugger. And I still need to hear a few albums that could easily make waves on the list: BTBAM, Tegan and Sara, and to a somewhat lesser extent, Katatonia, Nile, and The Red Chord.

Katatonia,

News to me.

Tegan and SaraI was gonna send this to you, but the link apparently isn't working anymore. It's out there, though, if you can find it.

The new Nile is really good, but I don't think it will climb that high for you or for me. I hope The Red Chord doesn't crack that territory on your list, either. I've seen them live, and they are respectable, but they really don't belong in anyone's top ten, IMNSHO. There is WAY too much better shit out there this year.

The only one that I really expect to bust into the top ten that I haven't heard is the Between the Buried and Me, and even that's sort of a long shot since "Obfuscation" isn't as good as anything on Colors.

Black Holes & Revelations is really, really good. On the new album, some of it is okay, but it's almost like they're trying way too hard to be Queen/David Bowie.

Totally agreed on all points. BH&R is much better than the new one, and the attempt at Queen is way fucking obvious - it's almost as if they were going for a concept album, where the concept was to be Queen for a day (sorry, bad pun - but it was too easy to pass up :D). BTW, I'm pretty sure they played "Starlight" from BH&R at the U2 show. There may have been others from this album, too - but that one was obvious when I heard it. Maybe "Knights of Cydonia", too.

If it's a support slot, I bet they played Starlight, Kinghts of Cydonia for sure, and probably Map of the Problematique, Assassin, or Invinvible.

I've yet to hear Obfuscation. I'm waiting for next Tuesday to hear the new BTBAM. Colors was my favorite album of 2007, and I fortuneate enough to see the whole album live.

I'm hoping The Great Misdirect will at least match, if not top Colors.

I'm kinda bored today and was scanning through the 50 pages this topic has generated and the Lamb of God bashing is baffeling to me.

How can someone worship Gwar and Cannibal Corpse and bag on Lamb of God as Macho, tough guy music? That is so fukkin hypocritical and childish that it blows my mind. Were these people beaten up by guys that wore Lamb of God shirts or something? It makes zero sense to me. I'm not bagging on these other bands just using them as examples.

Wrath will definitely be in my Top 5 of 2009 and with no clear #1 (I'm hoping Slayer) it could wind up at the top. I met and hung out with more bands this year than any time in my life and Lamb of God were by far the coolest guys of the bands I mentioned and anyone in all reality.

Why has it become trendy to hate on Lamb of God on this site? I see setlists of bands that are singing about kissing in the fukkin moonlight and other stupid girly shit and Lamb of God is the band they bash on? Something is ass-backwards here that's all I'm sayin.

And last but not least... if you bag on Lamb of God and admit to buying a Flaming Lips cd you are an EPIC FAILURE of major proportions! hahaha
