View Full Version : The Official Metal Setlists 2008 Voting Thread

Well, Barack Obama just got elected thanks in part to early voting, so what the fuck, here's the official polling center just because I know a lot of people are ready to vote already. A quick overview of the rules, since there were some pretty significant changes:

1. You can only vote for albums (or EPs or splits) of newly-recorded studio material that was released in the United States in 2008. This should pretty much be a given at this point.

2. You still need 10 albums to get full credit for your #1. If you vote for 5 albums, your #1 is worth 5.

3. The new multiplier is as follows: if an album receives three or more votes, each voter gives two bonus points to that album. For example, an album given a 3rd, 5th, and 10th by three different voters would earn 8 points for the 3rd, 6 points for the 5th, 1 point for the 10th, and an additional 6 points (2 times 3) for the voter quantity multiplier. Algebra can be fun when metal is involved.

4. Please refrain from posting your top 50 or whatever here, and from posting images of the albums you're voting for. Start your own damn threads for that, it'll just clog the page if you do it here.

5. There is no "metal only" rule, as decided by the Metal Setlists electorate. Diversify if you wish.

6. Have fun and don't be afraid to argue. That's the point of this whole charade. :rocker:

NOTE: If you've already started a thread of your own, still cast your vote in here or it won't count. I'm not gonna hunt and peck all over the board for your list.

Why are you giving points to albums you don't like? Even if you only give 2 points to your #1 and 1 to your #2, at least you wouldn't be giving one base point plus multiple voter points to albums you don't like. Seems to stupid to me.

To me they sound exactly like a band that basically anybody could like regardless of musical preference, I mean what's not to like about their jams? Okay, I may have overstated a bit, but still. I don't know how someone could not at least take a passive liking for something so harmless. It's not like people's shitty criticisms of other genres, like death metal just being rarr rarr rarr and rap just being wickity-wack and free jazz just being random notes. It's really very songly and hard to hate.

Even though Fleet Foxes are approximately a thousand times better than Scott Lee (and Mr. Davis for that matter), you're proving my point: you can't HATE acoustic folk music, especially with such an attention to texture and great songwriting as Fleet Foxes. You might not want to play it all the time, and that's fine, but hating it is ridiculous.

That new-fangled multiplier is only going to bump up Priest, Metallica and Bodom a couple of spots that they don't deserve.

Will it cite the number of points and how many votes each of the top 10 got?

I was drawing a parallel; it's really much more than that. But whatever, I don't really care what anyone else thinks about it. It's just that usually when I'm pitching something metalheads don't like there's something I can pick out as why, and this is honestly perplexing.

I'm not saying this to pick on Fleet Foxes, but in general, it might be the absolute total void of anything general metalheads enjoy about the metal they listen to. Just a thought. Something doesn't need a defining characteristic to NOT appeal to group.

Pisses me off that Death Magnetic is doing so well just because it's Metallica. I don't remember who said this, it may have been someone here. If so, I apologize for forgetting you said it.
If Death Magnetic had been some random band's debut album, no one would praise it, it wouldn't even gain them attention. Just because it's Metallica people are ready to bow to it. It's not a return to form, it sounds little like the 80s material, more like the 90s material, and in general just lacks any real passion or merit. It's definitely succeeded in being the album that has pissed me off the most this year. Not because it's awful, it's not. But because people are blowing it simply because they got a Metallica album that didn't suck giant donkey balls.

Not true, I genuinly love that album, and you know full well from both this year and last year I will quite readily put a bands debut album in my top ten if it's good. Who the band are mean nothing.

There hasn't been a Metallica album for 15 years that would have made my end of year top 10. So no, I for one am not putting it in there because it's Metallica, I'm putting it in there because I love the disc. Loudness problems or not.

I was making this point earlier. Yes, this album is better than St. Anger, but then again, would could they have done to make it worse? This album, I would venture to say, is not better than Black Album, the release that signaled their transition from awesome to shit. Because this album attains a slightly higher level of mediocrity than their past few, it is given such high praises.

The vocals suck, the drums are awful, and the guitars lack passion. Nothing about this album should give it Top 10 consideration. Goddamn Trivium's music is more inspired by this, but real metalheads hate Trivium because they sound too much like Metallica. Well, I'd take a shitty Metallica-look-alike over a shitty washed-up-Metallica anyday.

And it's VERY hypocritical to say it's only gaining attention because it's Metallica when A Matter of Life and Death completely annihilated everything else on the site list back in '06. Not true. A Matter of Life and Death was just another great album from a band we all love. Did it win just because it was Maiden? Yes. But that's just because everyone here loves Maiden, not because it was a mediocre album gaining praise just because it didn't suck ass like everything else Maiden had done in the last 15 years. The two situations are NOT comparable. If the next Maiden album isn't good, I'll be the first person to tell you so. Unlike most Metallica fans, I don't love Maiden because I cling desperately to the first 1/3 of their career badly wishing they'd put out something that doesn't suck.

I was talking more about the Metallica-ball-sucking in the metal community at large. Obviously, we all here are more mature and have more developed tastes, but the metal/hardrock/MTV community is gargling the cum of this latest sub-par endeavor.

The fact that it is Metallica, just like with AC/DC or Guns N Roses, sells the album. The quality of the actual music is secondary. For the mainstream metal community anyway.

There's a point of mine you are missing. One of my absolutely biggest issues with Death Magnetic is that everyone and their mother are praising it as a "return to fom" or something of the like. It sounds nothing like the 80s material. That's not me hating on it, it's a simple fact. I barely even like 80s Metallica. It sounds much more like a faster version of what Metallica released throughout the 90s, when millions of people hated them for doing it. You can say what you want about the name Iron Maiden selling albums, but they're not selling them because people are saying things about the albums that aren't true. They are selling on the name because the name Iron Maiden has come to represent an institution that its fans stick by, and they achieved this by being who they are. Whereas Metallica's name only sells albums because they sold out to the MTV generation years and years ago and the name means FAR more than anything they put out. Proof: St. Anger sold like hotcakes. I don't suppose you want to compare sales figures for St. Anger to The X Factor do you? I'm just saying both names sell albums, but for entirely different reasons.
