Obviously I'm not doing a big countdown of 100 albums like I did last year, I'm only making my own thread because...

10,000 POSTS

[edit: list scrapped, see my new thread]

I like how your taste in music has become simultaneously more and less metal-friendly than it was last year.

Happy 10,000th post!

I fucking love the Nas and Immortal Technique.

But everyone already knows that, so....

Our lists share Cynic, Opeth, and Fleet Foxes.

I can see how it became less, but how so more? I just wasn't as impressed with the metal I heard this year.

Hmm, yeah. By more I basically meant liking Opeth again.

Vampire Weekend? :hecho:

I know! I'm angry how much less metal and more diverse he is than us. This can't be tolerated. We're going to have to include Girl Talk now or lose our un-metal metal cred.

Girl Talk

woahwoahwoah

Let's not do anything crazy now...

Yep, great album even though their rich-hipster-kid attitude is gross. The lyrics reflects this attitude a little bit, and that's the album's biggest flaw for me.

Have you heard it?

Have you heard it?Sadly, yes. A lot of my friends like them. I think they're shit.

Any particular reason?

I don't know, they're just boring and obnoxious in a "Look how quirky and clever we are!" sort of way. I think their hipster-ism has a big part in my opinion of them, but I would be willing to look past that if I liked their music.

Made some significant changes... I just acquired a couple new albums, which may have been a bad idea so late in the game, but whatever.

I have to check out that Rome album, your writeup at the time intrigued me

Gah, I just can't help myself, and it looks like I'll have heard 50 albums by the time this thing is over. Once I'm done I'll re-work my list to countdown format.

What did you think of the Nas and the Satyricon?

Still haven't heard the Nas. The Satyricon, well, I think it gets too much flack just by virtue of Satyricon being a "sellout" BM band. It's still not great, or even good really, but there were definitely parts I enjoyed--Satyricon does black-n-roll better than they do black metal.

Yeah. I never listened to early Satyricon, when he was considered black metal, but I kinda liked Now Diabolical and all its 'black n roll'. Age of Nero, from what I have heard, sounds more black metal than ND.

That's kind of the problem. Whenever it leans more towards black metal, it ends up sounding like an awful parody (this was the case on the last two albums, as well). When Satyr just throws down and rocks out, though, the results can be pretty cool. There were also a few subtle electronic elements on the album which I liked--like in "The Sign of the Trident", I think, there's this low, electronic pulse during one of the verses that I thought added to the music.

In fact, now that I think of it, early Satyricon mostly sounds like an awful parody of black metal, too.

In the video for Black Crow on a Tombstone, Satyr looks likes he is impersonating a Christopher Walken, Ihsahn, and Elvis love-child. I mean, he cut his hair...he looked pretty badass in the Pentagram Burns video....now he looks lame.

The big sunglasses also remind me of Quorthon. But yeah, that video is absolutely ridiculous.

At this point I've heard 50 albums, I just need to do a few last-minute re-listens and finish writing my blurbs. Right now I have 33 done. Once I finish (or perhaps a bit before that), I'm just gonna scrap this list and start a new thread, countdown-style.
