Two major discoveries, so to speak:
KRS-One. I don't know how I missed him all through the 80s and 90s. But he is absolutely the baddest badass MC I've heard.
Hot Snakes. A band consisting of members from Drive Like Jehu and Rocket from the Crypt that rocks harder than both. Or rocked, rather. They broke up a couple years ago, of course.
To a lesser degree, I also found I like: Regina Spektor, The Joggers, Medications, My Dear Disco, some Nina Simone, some Nas.
I didn't get too many new albums that blew me away, but the one that did, that has never gotten old, is:

Um, I'd have to think about this, I'm not even sure I discovered in 2008... I think I've discovered old school bands like Scorpions, Motorhead, Accept and all that.
Never gave them a proper chance

What songs were on this list?
I don't even know most of them by name. But it's a great, career-spanning mix.
Here's some of what's on it (I searched lyrics and found some titles):
Squash All Beef
Rappaz R. N. Dainja
My Philosophy
MCs Act Like They Don't Know
The MC
No Gimmicks (Lord Finesse track that KRS-One appears on and OWNS.)
I'm Still #1
A Friend
Free Mumia
Drug Dealer
C.I.A. (Criminals in Action)
Ah Yeah
All those tracks are insanely great.

I'll get it some day man. I'm not in a big hurry though: saw a video of Tupac dissin' Nas back in the day...around the release of that....so..I'm a little cautious.
Your 2008 sounds rough man :(

BTW, Scott, what's a good album to start with for Hot Snakes?
All I have is Audit in Progress, which is awesome.
I've heard several songs off Suicide Invoice via Pandora radio, and they've been great as well.
