"I think most of our new material is going to be more under the rock category, but it's pretty epic and involved, extremely layered, broad, melodic, dark, and creepy ... So it is going to be more of a rock kind of Count Chocula-meets-DEEP PURPLE thing. That's kind of what we're saying." - Troy Sanders

No date or artwork yet, but I'll be up at midnight for this one.

Edit:
Got this from the Mayhem tour, it might give you some idea of what's going on.

Count Chocula-meets-DEEP PURPLE thing.

I love both of those things.

I'm not a huge Mastodon fan, but maybe I'll look into this.

Now all they need to do is make the fifth one about heart and then Captain Planet can come out.

mastadons first release was the pinnacle of their career. not everything prior completely sucks, but nothing else theyve done can live up to that album.

You really think so? Yeesh, I'd probably say Leviathan > Blood Mountain > Remission > EP/7" stuff.

I'm stoked! I remember Brann dispelling rumors that it was a concept album about Rasputin, but it looks like it wasn't too far off the mark.

A 2-disc concept album about the life and teachings of Captain Planet

It has some of my favorite tracks on it but I completely disagree. You might wanna give the last 2 a couple more spins.

the sound is just so much more raw and noisy, and those samples they use are just perfect. the newer albums got too refined.

Lifesblood and Remission are their only two good records.

I can't believe I actually bought Leviathan.

What a piece of nauseating shit.

Seriously? Leviathan is my favorite of theirs. I'm not so keen on Blood Mountain really, but man. Seriously Leviathan rocks just as hard as Remission. :eyes:

I didn't see them touring in support of Leviathan, but I did see them support Remission which was awesome b/c I saw Neurosis and Cephalic Carnage at the same show AND I saw them support Blood Mountain which was terrible... Only reason I was there was for Converge.

I'm highly likely to agree with this, but I'm beginning to lean more towards Leviathan > Call Of The Mastodon (EP/7" stuff) > Blood Mountain > Remission.

Skeptical.....'Blood Mountain' was described by Sanders to be a cross between King Crimson/Slayer, yet it sounds little like either band. And maybe it's just me but I find that while it was initially a killer album, it hasn't really held up. In fact the only Mastodon I go back to at all now if ever is 'Remission'. But I'm still down to check this one out.

I am so fucking sick of hearing that everything after Remission doesn't hold up. How the fuck could anyone get through Trilobite and Trainwreck once, let alone multiple times? What exactly doesn't hold up about Levithan and Blood Mountain?

Eh, I dunno. Maybe I just played those albums out too many times. Then again, God knows how many times I've listened to same Iron Maiden albums without getting tired of them. I'll agree that Leviathan probably has the best songs overall though. Just haven't felt the urge to listen to it in months......maybe year(s)?

Is this directed towards Converge or Blood Mountain?

In either case, I was obsessed with Mastodon when they hit the scene and picked up Lifesblood right quick. The next obvious step was Remission.

I copped Leviathan but was unable to listen to it all b/c it sucked so bad.

It made me massively depressed- sort of like when Pig Destroyer released Phantom Limb...like it's not THAT bad, but Prowler as an album is so hard to live up to, then you have Terrifier which wasn't that bad, not as good as Prowler but beats the fuck out of Limb.

I was always surprised that people liked newer Mastodon.

I love newer Mastodon AND think Phantom Limb is the best PxDx album.

I actually find the King Crimson/Slayer thing to be pretty accurate when describing that album..some slower metal in there and you're set.

Update
Gay Porn (http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=110859)

Although MASTODON's new album, "Crack The Skye", is a conceptual piece in the same vein as the band's previous releases, it is not about air but "ether." "The whole story has little to do with what the album emotionally is really about," clarifies Dailor. "But everything in the lyrics and the story is metaphors. We wanted to stick with elements and we wanted to do the 'ether' record. Ether is what the soul is made out of and it took a few months to connect all the dots."

Dailor goes on to explain the "Crack The Skye" concept: "There is a paraplegic and the only way that he can go anywhere is if he astral travels. He goes out of his body, into outer space and a bit like Icarus, he goes too close to the sun, burning off the golden umbilical cord that is attached to his solar plexus. So he is in outer space and he is lost, he gets sucked into a wormhole, he ends up in the spirit realm and he talks to spirits telling them that he is not really dead. So they send him to the Russian cult, they use him in a divination and they find out his problem. They decide they are going to help him. They put his soul inside Rasputin's body. Rasputin goes to usurp the czar and he is murdered. The two souls fly out of Rasputin's body through the crack in the sky(e) and Rasputin is the wise man that is trying to lead the child home to his body because his parents have discovered him by now and think that he is dead. Rasputin needs to get him back into his body before it's too late. But they end up running into the Devil along the way and the Devil tries to steal their souls and bring them down…there are some obstacles along the way."

The title track, "Crack The Skye", features vocals by Scott Kelly of NEUROSIS. "We heard Scott's voice all over that track," Dailor says. "It's really NEUROSIS-sounding and then when it became the title track, in particular vocally and lyrically it had a lot to do with Skye so it made it even more perfect that Scott would be doing the verses on it just because he is very familiar with that tremendous loss, suicide, stuff like that…"

I think that storyline sounds awesomely ridiculous, but if it actually lives up to the psychadelic vibe they seem to be going for then it could be pretty good.

The rest of the interview is interesting too, Brann's sister was named Skye and she killed herself when she was 14 so apparently that ties in as well.

I would think not, because their "away from my girlfriend too long" song ended up being Pendulous Skin. I have some faith in them. That and I've heard 3 of the 7 songs.

As of today they've revealed a new page layout and a clip of Oblivion. I've also heard some rumours that the reason the album was pushed back to (what will hopefully be the release date) in March is that the packaging is going to be pretty robust, maybe even... pop ups. Either way, it sounds like this would be the second album to do something like this, just behind 10,000 Days unless you count a couple of Zeppelin records.
I'll be getting some promo materials soon so I'll post if anything big comes up.
