Seeing as we have a dedicated movies forum, I figure there might as well be a dedicated DVD purchases thread.

I've recently picked up:

Black Hawk Down (3-DVD Special Edition)
Gabriel
Hitman: Extreme Edition
30 Days of Night
Assault on Precinct 13 (2005)
The Island

Mostly fairly brain-in-a-jar stuff, but should all be good fun for a Saturday evening.

I recently bought No Country for Old Men, but pretty soon I'm gonna be buying Network, Good Night and Good Luck, and All the President's Men, because I love media movies but don't own any.

Yep, just about. Some stuff of that age is reaching the 5 mark (I got Gabriel for 3.50), but not all. I've got an appreciable wishlist ;)

Yeah they're all great, but I think Network might even be my favorite. Chances are your local rental shack has it for a dollar, it's well worth the two hours.

I just got season 2 of The Magnificent Seven. Did anyone watch that? Eric Close, Ron Perlman and Michael Biehn sounds like a good combo to me. I've got season 1 too, but haven't watched it yet.

Also got a series called ReGenesis which sounds cool, and a mini series starring Sam Neil called The Triangle.

I just bought Diary of the Dead on a whim.

What a fucking awesome movie. Not in a "This is going to win awards" type of way but in a "Holy shit this is so over the top and crazy, it's like a modern day B-Movie" type of way.

:D

OK, watched it now. It's good, but the vampires are disappointingly CGi, which there was no need to do.

Other than that, enjoyable movie.

Also just watched Southland Tales. Less good.

Pretty fucking awesome. I know you've seen them live, so you know that they're absolutely fantastic, and all the live stuff here represents that. To be honest the video quality of the primary concert isn't amazing, but it's good. My favorite thing about the DVD is that the 2nd DVD has 11 separate songs that don't appear on the first disc. The live at ProgPower '07 and the "Rehearsal Room" Footage are probably the 2 best things on the entire DVD actually. All in all it's just pretty awesome, especially for a band that previously had no video available.

Not only was this price fucking ridiculous, there's blatantly no communication between the warehouse and the head office. Given that this box is now out of print, head office emailed me saying they're processing a refund of my 9.34.

But the warehouse clearly had one copy left, which they sent me. So when my refund is processed, and given that I used Quidco.com for cashback on online purchases, I'll have been paid about 0.80 to own a 22-disc box set.

I just never got around to buying it before. For one thing, the special editions (which I loathe with every fiber of my being) were the only ones available on DVD for quite a while. They finally released the two disc DVDs that had the unaltered theatrical versions on the "bonus" disc, but it took me a while to bother picking it up.

Already mentioned it, but I got Kick-Ass on Blu-Ray. It looks spectacular as I expected, and the special features are solid. It has a making-of documentary that's as long as the actual movie, and has some interesting and funny stuff in it. The highlight was probably one of Chloe Moretz's stunt doubles, a 28 year-old Chinese guy, decked out in the Hit Girl costume

The local Blockbuster has used Blu-Ray copies of District 9, Inglourious Basterds, and The Hurt Locker for $15 each; I might pick those up this weekend. Other Blu-Ray purchases from the last couple weeks: Shaun of the Dead, The Punisher, and Watchmen.

Seven's a funny number...

I loved the new version of '3:10 To Yuma'. I have the old one too, but haven't watched it yet.

I'll let you know how 'Following' turns out.

The Magnificent Seven, Seven Samurai, The Seventh Seal...could be more ridiculous. ;) But really, it's just because I don't have three more movies that I feel as strongly about as those seven, and I doubt if I ever see anything that I like enough to knock even one of them into 8th place.

And yep, the new one is the one I got, it's great. Haven't seen the old one yet but American Westerns from the '50s generally don't do much for me.

And I saw Following. It's probably the worst Nolan, but even that's a pretty good film.

I agree with Brad - these are both awesome. I also liked the remake of 3:10 to Yuma. It's amazing how likeable both Crowe and Bale can be onscreen, given both of their notable offscreen outbursts of temper from time to time. I guess we all have our momemnts, though. :D

I'm still in the process of replacing my DVDs with Blu-Rays. I've got about 20 more to go, but luckily most of the them are old enough that the BD versions are cheap. There are a few that haven't been converted yet (most notably Pulp Fiction and The Big Lebowski), though. I'm still debating on whether or not to get Lord of the Rings; I'm sure it looks amazing, but they're only the theatrical versions. If it do get them, I'll hang on to my extended version DVDs. Then there's the question of whether to get Star Wars when that comes out this year, but I don't even want to get into that now :hmm:

Really? Why?

When I bother getting around to getting a blu-ray player I'll re-buy, like 10 important movies and that's it. Upscaling players make DVDs look perfectly good enough. Especially old stuff that wasn't even filmed in HD anyway.

Sure there's probably a bit of a difference, but frankly neither your or my eyes are good enough to notice :p

Well, I'm mostly focusing on the newer, effects-heavy movies for now (Iron Man, Star Trek, etc.), and the other ones I may never bother with, unless I see them dirt cheap. You're right, though. Your average drama or comedy doesn't gain much, if anything, from the conversion. But anytime from now on that I buy a movie I don't already have, it'll be on BD.

2D animation doesn't gain anything from the conversion, either, though I suppose that probably goes without saying. Disney's really pushing blu-ray and I don't get it. The only thing I can really say I enjoy more in HD is nature-related documentaries or something like that. Even if they were there to be seen in the first place (which they're not), I don't need to be able to see every tiny detail on Cinderella's glass slipper in immaculate high definition. The best they can do for a traditionally animated film is, what, sharpen the lines? BATB on DVD is fine. I've seen some screencaps of the blu-ray, and I don't even think I like how hard the lines are. Sort of distracting to me.

If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times: HD was created for sports. Whenever I go to a sports bar where I can watch a game in HD on a flatscreen then I have to come home and watch one on my TV, it ruins my day.

Maybe not older animated movies, but contemporary stuff (The Simpsons Movie, Pixar movies, Venture Bros., etc.) looks fantastic because the colors are so deep and rich.

That's why I specified traditionally animated. I haven't seen a single Pixar movie in HD. I imagine, however, that CGI movies can benefit in a lot of the ways that live action can. A quick lookup of comparison shots from Toy Story 3 - there's definitely more of a noticeable difference there than there is for ANY of the 2D Disney films, IMO. Even the most recent, Princess and the Frog - yeah, the colors are a bit richer. But I have it on DVD and still think that looks fantastic.

I guess I can see where people would want their colors to be deeper and richer. But to me, it's not noticeable enough of a difference to effect me. I'm perfectly content with the way my DVDs look. The coloring in most Disney films wasn't really ever bland to begin with.

The unmistakable formula of Andy Sidaris - beautiful people filmed in exotic locations with an unapologetic amount of explosions, gunplay, and Playboy Playmates - all with big budgets and high productions values! For the first time own the entire library in one attractive, complete 12 Movie Collection. Starring Pat Morita (Karate Kid), Erik Estrada (CHIPS), Darby Hinton (Daniel Boone), Bruce Penhall (CHIPS), Steve Bond (General Hospital), Danny Trejo (Planet Terror) and dozens of popular centerfolds including Dona Speir, Julie K. Smith, Hope Marie Carlton, Sybil Danning, Roberta Vasquez, Julie Strain and more!

B movie goodness for 5.49 from Amazon :D

THE DALLAS CONNECTION: I don't know what the Connection is, I'm not really sure it's even mentioned in the movie. But a team of gorgeous assassins is wiping out a group of scientists who possess some dangerous secret. Only one scientist remains and it's up to Samantha Phillips and her fellow agents to save them. There are some wacky death scenes, and a nice "Basic Instinct" style beginning which features the leader of the murderous trio, Julie Strain.

DAY OF THE WARRIOR: The Legion to Ensure Total Harmony and Law (L.E.T.H.A.L.) is hunting an evil genius known as The Warrior. Warrior's turn ons include diamond smuggling, porn and art theft. Best line in the movie is spoken by Julie Strain's character Willow Black;"I worked at Disneyland. I was one of the rides." Gerald Okamura plays a martial arts master named Fu. You will recognize him from Big Trouble in Little China, among many other roles.

DO OR DIE: This is the silliest movie in the Sidaris oeuvre. You've got Mr.Miyagi as an Asian criminal mastermind and Eric Estrada...period. Miyagi sends several teams of assassins after our fair ladies and R rated hijinx ensue. The colorful assassins remind me of the killers sent after Peter Sellers in The Pink Panther Strikes Again.

ENEMY GOLD: Now this is a great one! Evil assassins hassle our heroes whilst they're looking for Quantrill's Lost Civil War gold! There are historical flashbacks and characters named Jewel Panther and Becky Midnight. What's not to like?

FIT TO KILL: There's something going on here about a rare missing Russian diamond, but once you see Julie Strain working out on a balcony you'll forget about things like "Plot". For extra fun though there's a cool helicopter battle.

GUNS: Is this a sexy feminist comedy or a feminist sex comedy? I dunno that's too much thinkin' for me. It's also got Erik Estrada, Danny Trejo, oil wrestling and hand grenades. Sounds like a great week in Vegas.

HARD HUNTED: You can't spell PLOT without a T and an A....well... Anyway we have another of Andy Sidaris' version of Charlie's Angels for Men. The girls need to track down a nuclear detonator or blah-ditty-blah-blah-blah.

HARD TICKET TO HAWAII: The evil Dr. Chang plans on destroying the economy of Hawaii and only super-agents Donna and Taryn and their pet mutant snake can stop him. This cultural and intellectual extravaganza features blow up dolls, razor tipped Frisbees and skate-boarding thugs.

MALIBU EXPRESS: This is sort of a down home Burt Reynolds type movie except it happens at the beach, and stars an 80's porn star/surfer dude, Sybil Danning and a red Delorean.

PICASSO TRIGGER: A cool title but probably one of the least of Sidaris' films. A bad guy tries to ice all the agents involved in his brother's death.

SAVAGE BEACH: Smoking hot Agents Donna and Taryn wander around a humid jungle in tiny tops looking for lost treasure. They run into an old Japanese soldier who still thinks WW2 is going on and a bunch of baddies also looking for the treasure. Plenty of action but for me not quite enough wacky humor.

RETURN TO SAVAGE BEACH: The Ladies of LETHAL try to recover a lost treasure before a hoard of bad guys can snag it. This one has plenty of skimpy outfits, hot actresses, bad dialogue and explosions but it's not as wacky or fun as many of Sidaris' earlier films.

Hehe, ok. But the interruptions during the concert are annoying imho and there's too many shots of the audience.

They are ALWAYS annoying. I can't work out why bands keep doing that with live DVDs. No one likes it.

Yeah, my brother's like that. Which is why he barely owns any DVDs.

While I barely own any I don't like. About 95% of the time I just choose well :)

Drive, now there was a mistake.

I do as well. The only exception to the rule is if a video store is going out of buisness or something like that and it's a dollar or two for a movie I'm curious about.

I almost always buy movies I don't see. But then again the disc replay buy me marks the majority of their movies at around $2.88. Doesn't matter if it's new, old, or even the collectors edition.

I've not watched any Boardwalk Empire either. I don't even have season one. I just had to buy season two because 10.60 for a very recent blu ray boxed set is insane.

Supernatural I've seen the first three seasons. It's a little formulaic at times, but enjoyable.

I found it more entertaining than the last one. The writing is still brainless and most of the supporting actors are terrible, but the action scenes are great fun.

Yep. Frighteners has always been a favourite, and I didn't own it.

With Fifth Element, I had it on VHS, but never got the DVD, then it went out of print here for years. It was a pretty big deal when it go re-issued on blu ray.

I never buy DVD's/Blurays but I really wanted to see the Mass Effect feature length that came out called Paragon Lost. So, I bought it. It's okay. I love the series and to condense what is usually a forty hour experience into an hour and a half was pretty hard. So they did the best they could. I guess I can say that for a video game to movie adaptation it's really good. The animation is okay, the voice acting is a little grating and the music is non-existent. I really would've preferred a more synth-based soundtrack. Or even some tracks from the games just to tie it all in a little more. Unless there were some and I just didn't notice, but I don't think there was. I can't complain about the overall darkness of the movie because it was pretty bleak in the end. THe deaths of all the characters were a little predictable. I liked the ending but it dragged on a little too long. But I was surprised. I spent twenty five dollars on it and, to anyone interested, it's better as a movie that's on TV some night or something. It even seemed a bit designed for TV with the fades between some scenes.

If anything it gives me hope that more stories detailing the rest of the Mass Effect universe will come out some day.
